To 19" wheels or not?
My wife just offered to get me new wheels and tires for Valentines.
My only problem is I’m not sure weather to go +1 to 19” or stay with the 18” OEM size. Any help from those of you that have gone to 19’s would be great to hear from. This is the list I have come up with against going to 19” wheels and tires. 1. Additional weight of the wheels for 19”. Most are actually heavier unless you look at wheels about $500 each. 2. The tire I would like to purchase is not available in 19” Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R 3. I am worried about a stiffer ride with the 19” 4. I am worried about increased possibility of Wheel damage from pot holes with the 19” Pluses with the 19” wheels 1. Looks better? Fills out the fenders better than the 18” wheels. 2. May help slightly with the overall handling of the car? Any help with this would be great. Thanks Red

Just go with the 19"s. You rarely hear people complain of going to 19's but always hear people complain they should have gone with 19's instead of 18's.

Depends if you want show or go. Even the Porsche Cayenne GTS has 21's for show. I don't think there is any way to justify 19's except for looks. If the OP is comfortable with that, it's his car, just get them. The trade-off is increased unsprung weight.

If you don't have blacklines yet, maybe you should get those...makes all e90's look so much better. I think they're almost more important than wheels. Almost.

I'm not sure exactly, but if you search for 'blacklines' up in the top right you should be able to find out a good deal.

Coming from 18" RFT the ride on the 19"s is actually smoother! Quote:

I dont agree with 19s being heavier than 18s all the time. BMW OEM rims are usually pretty heavy. OEM 162s 18s weight 30 and 32 lbs front and rear respectively. When I got 19s CSL reps they were 24.75 and 25.25lbs front and rear respectively. So that's a weight savings of 24lbs. I say go with 19s, they do make the car look better.

Why does everybody talk about the look of their cars? I really don’t care about the look of my car; you can’t see the bloody thing from the driver’s seat anyway! How this thing goes on the roads, that what I’m concerned about.
I went to 19” on my E90 and the difference in overall performance from 18” is marginally, though the handling of the car was improved quite a lot (I’m running Bilstein shocks and springs assisted by H&R sways in both ends). I think the most important is the weight of the rims and the rubber you wrap those rims in. Bye wheels as light as possible and don’t bye the cheapest rubber, it doesn’t work very well and it wears out to damn fast. I have been running Bridgestone, Goodyear, Dunlop, Michelin and Conti over the years and now I’m back on Michelin PS2 and is wary happy with it. It’s a nice compromise between performance in dry and wet conditions (it rains a lot in Denmark over the year). If you are short of money, it might be a good idea to bye 18” in a decent quality instead of the cheapest 19” set on the marked. That’s my opinion. The only disadvantage of wide 19” wheels is the fuel economy at higher speeds. Last edited by Brynjolfur; 02-08-2008 at 12:02 AM.. |

My 19" M6 reps weigh 7 pounds less than my stock 18" wheels. Check out this thread with pics of both wheels on a scale...

I think it depends on the quality of roads you drive on a daily basis. I have 19s and sometimes regret the purchase because the roads around here are in poor condition. However, I love the look.
