Nail in my run flat!
My low tire pressure light came on so i went to the dealer to get it checked out. While inspecting the right front tire there was a nail close to the middle. BMW's asking $460 for tire and labor. Since it was pricy I decided to fill it back up with air and drive it for awhile. lol Air is leaking out slowly but the car is still driveable. Can it be patched?? or am i gonna need to order a new tire soon??? I'll post pics up when i get home from work.

you dont really want to patch a RFT. you can get a replacement on tirerack and just have someone install it for a lot less than the dealer will do.

I've heard of people patching these, although it probably isn't recommended. You can probably get the same tire for a lot cheaper from tirerack.com. This is why I got the $500 tire insurance, I'm getting a tire replaced today and I had 3 tires replaced on my previous 335.

risks are that the patch wont hold and will tear again. depending on what tire it is, it can throw off your alignment and make your call pull. the light will come on again probably and you'd probably want to dsc and dtc on and not take things fast anymore because its easier to blow out a compromised tire

You can have a runflat repaired if its not a performance tire and if hasn"t damaged the sidewall. Firestone has plugged two of my Bridgestones on my non-sport sedan. I got another alarm today. One tire is about 3 psi low so I"ll pump it and see what it does.

Yes, you can patch them as long as is not too close to the side wall.
America's Tire has patched two of my runflats. And if you want to pay less don't go to the dealer. One of my runflats could not be fixed and the dealer wanted $80 more. |

Guys it's not a big deal. A patch installed from the inside of the tire is the best option other than a replacement.
Sure you can plug it from the outside but I wouldn't drive high speeds for extended time. The downside? mose tire shops charge extra to remove and reinstall a runflat tire due to stiffer sidewalls.

I had a flat on a non-RFt and I had the tire pulled off of the rim. The shop put a plug in it and a patch on it. I drove that tire for 20000+ miles without issue. I have read where some shops won't patch a RFT and others will. I wonder if there is an increased level of difficulty in removing a RFT from the rim? After all, the tread, but not the sidewall, should be the same on a RFT and non-RFT so I don't see any reason why you can't fix one.

I had a nail in my tire 3-4 weeks ago, but because I have tire warranty, so i replaced it totally. I don't think you can patch though. And with RFT's, you can drive for another 100 miles.

Just patched my RFT Continental today. No problem. I put it to 120 for 45 sec straight, then took a curb at 70mph with no problem. Feels the same. As long as you don't get another nail or flat in that same tire, your tire will be good. I though the same thing you did, should I go to dealer. Mines was a bolt, not a nail, three times thicker than yours and it patched up just fine. Don't put a plug as high speeds or heavy loads will likely leak again through the hole. If it's your sidewall, then the tire is no good. That's the whole reason you have a RFT, the sidewalls. Order a new tire from tirerack or a discount tire store and install it yourself at a local tire shop. Patch it from the inside, then re-balance the wheel. Save your money and then replace both rear or fronts when treads are showing their age.

I bought this insurance for my tires for $700 when I bought my car. So whenever I get a puncture I just take it in and they throw a new one on there.
