False Tire pressure Alarm?

Hi,
Given our Canadian cars don't come w TPMS and use some sensors to detect some difference of tire pressure, how accurate is this system?
Driving today in the highway I got the orange Alarm even in the HUD! Parked on hard shoulder and checked, all four tires were equal pressure of 35psi. I had them inflated at 32psi cold.

Happens to me too, but in my case there are minute difference in the air pressure.
Make sure you use a good air pressure gauge. Those pencil- tip ones are lousy.
I use this one:

Thanks. I use a digital talking tire gauge, but it is a pencil type. So then that sensor based system must react to a 1/2 psi difference? Not sure if any gauge is that precise, also when you insert the gauge to check you deflate a bit of air if you're not dead quick. Does the above model have better precision ($66!), or facilitate the checking operation?

Just saw this vid
, it has a nice feature to deflate an over inflated tire, nice! But still confused about the hold valve feature? Def buying it, thanks for the tip. or maybe I'll go crazy and get the digital one

Yes, because of the angle of the chuck, the way it swivels and the long rubber hose, it is easier and more convenient to reach the tire valve to take a reading. You can also be quite quick during the attachment and thus lose minimal to no air.
These gauges are definitely more accurate than the pencil-type.
Finally, the hold valve allows you to remove the gauge from the tire valve, yet the reading does not go away / reset to zero. The reading is held on the gauge face.

Thanks for the info. I thought the hold feature was related to the quick deflate button. I think I'll get it wo the hold, almost double the price...

Has happened to me several times, usually when driving somewhat aggressively on roads with a bit of gravel in places. Not sure why. Never had an actual flat tire. Thanks for the suggestion on a better pressure gauge. Will have to get one.

Anyone know what would be involved in installing U.S. style TPMS? The winter tires I bought in the U.S. have the sensors in the wheels but I don't have the receiving part(s).

+1, I have searched and not sure if our cars are equipped or can be retrofitted w the receiver. I thought that new high end cars had TPMS but was surprised that the Canadian version of the M doesn't. Of well, those racing gauges are cool, so another reason to shell out some more money to buy a good one

Happened to me when I first picked up the car after about 60k. checked and all tire pressures were 39-40psi hot.

I just chalked it up to the techs forgetting to reset TPMS.

Of course you have checked your tire pressure since? My dealer on delivery had them super inflated... First thing I checked.

Of course! They've been steady since.

The come shipped pretty inflated so your dealer probably forgot to set the tire pressures properly.

Same thing here.

Had to stop because of the warning.

When i checked the pressure (warm) they were at 42 to 40 psi.

So I guess my dealer did not check the pressure when they prepared the car.

Still get the warning from time to time.

Finally managed to buy a joes racing tire gauge, basic analog one. I checked my tires and there's a difference of 2 psi between Joes (lower) and my digital talking pencil type gauge... Jeez have I been running all those years on my previous BMWs with the wrong pressure?

So do I blindly trust the Joes racing gauge and set the tire pressure at 32psi while the digital pencil one shows 34psi?

Well it *is* a racing gauge. And racers depend on very small, tight tolerances and PSI measurements.
For the street I don't think it matters much, but I trust my Joes gauge.

I also used the included tire Compressor that comes w the car and that one gave 30psi. So I will go w the Joes racing measurement. It gives consistent results. Thanks!

My E92 was notorious for giving false alarms. My M4 has been good thus far.

Note that the TPMS system on Canadian cars works off the ABS/DSC wheel speed sensors and monitors diferences and changes in the relative wheel speeds to "guess" if a tire is running low. Because of this, it is imperative to reset your system through iDrive every time you adjust the tire pressures. If you don't, the system will falsly believe something is askew and will likely trigger a false alarm.

Hi! Yes, I have reset the FTM system the times I adjusted the tire pressure. Curious what tire pressure gauge do you use on the track?

This is what I use. Digital readout to 0.1psi. Directly connected to my portable air tank. You measure and adjust (inflate or deflate) pressure in a single action. Once you have tasted that luxury, you can no longer go without .

Ok that's cool ... But you need an air compressor to fill the portable air tank right? I paid $40Cdn for the basic joes racing. Didn't know you can get that low of price for a precise digital gauge ! Of course that's from Amazon.com so w currency diff and customs ... It will be like 100. Next year when I start going to some track I will justify that purchase

Once you start tracking, $100 will be pocket change compared to your other expenditures
