blacked out grilles

Hey guys,
I blacked out my 330 grilles (like seen on this forum), and they look great. However, I sprayed with about 4 coats of clear-coat, but I'm still getting significant numbers of rock chips, and now the chrome is showing thru in about two or three places.
1) should I re-paint and re-clear coat? If so,how many coats of clear coat will protect against rock chips?
2) I knowyou can get blacked out grilles and body colored surrounds for the E46... DO you think we'll see something like that for the E90 in the near future? I'd probably go with that rather than keep re-painting.

I love my car!

Damn...I just don't get it. What the hell was wrong with the 330 grilles? Sometimes, I think you guys have gone too far on modding your cars.

Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

I don't necessarily mind some cosmetic moding but why not just trade you're chrome for some 325 black and just blacken the chome outer rim of the grill. Just a thought.

yea i blacked mine out too, if they chip real easy it means u did not sand good enough and might have been your drying time

the slats stay black easily... low profile to rock. It's the chrome surrounds that get chipped.
And it's all about personal preferance. Nothing was "wrong" with the 330 grilles. I saw some pics of black grilles on a black car, and I thought "Hey, that looks neat. I wonder if I could do that?". Not that I "experiment" on 45K cars, but I figured this would be a simple mod that I like. I'm sure plenty of people LOVE chrome.... I lik ethe slick black on clack look.
By the way, thanx for the input.

Did you sand them down before applying the paint?

i sanded them as per dyi instructs. and three coats of clear coat. Perhaps my drying time was inadequate.... or the rocks in ohx are just HUGE.
