Virginia Property Taxes

Anyone else in VA that did ED and PCD getting screwed on their property taxes?

After registering my car, the county is trying to assess taxes from the purchase date instead of the date I actually brought the vehicle home, which was nearly five months later. Now they want a bill of lading in order to possibly reduce the number of months it's being assessed. I can get the cargo ship info. But does anyone know where the get the info for while the car was in transit from the port to the dealer?

It does suck but at least we pay 1% property tax for real estate where other states pay 3% ...which one would you prefer to pay property tax on car or 3% for your house?

VA laws suck big time. I could never own a fast car in that state. Over 80mph is a misdemeanour Go figure.

You need to talkmto your dealer. I did ED PCD and the date I paid taxes on was the date I got the car to Virginia. DMV got that from the dealer. Or go right to DMV and tell them the car was not garaged until the date it was.

I recommend contacting BMW NA and your dealer to secure the appropriate documents. I believe you're required to pay taxes from the day you assume ownership of the automobile [start date on lien] -- they will only likely assess the base price of the vehicle for tax purposes, excluding options.

Well in NY we don't pay taxes on our cars so they just double everything else. I'd gladly trade some car tax for our property and school tax bills. My family in CT pays 1/2 of what I do.

This is a county issue. When I registered with the county I put the date it came to VA.

I'm more annoyed about the fact they get info from the DMV and don't automatically generate a tax bill for you so you don't even have to register with the county to get a decal.

Maybe your dealer used a different date in the title work. Mine used the date I signed all the paperwork before leaving for ED.

How does it work in Virginia? Is the tax bill yearly or every 6 months?

CT is even worse. I will be up over $2200 for the year on taxes on a damn lease for the year.
Its yearly. In Arlington County it's 5% of the vehicles value. They subsidize the first 3k at 100% and then the next 17k at 27%. I'm estimating a tax bill around 2800 for a year.

I did ED and took re-delivery of my F80 July 27th in VA. My property tax bill was around $1500. My wife's was $1400 for her 2014 X3. Property taxes here are indeed terrible

I am doing the exact same thing and now you have me wondering if I am going to get screwed also, did ED last week and doing PCD hopefully around end of January, signed the paperwork mid November. I never thought about the county trying to screw me with paying almost 3 months worth of personal property taxes for a car that is not even in the US yet let alone VA, I guess it depends with when the dealer sends in the registration papers which tells the county I have the car...I am going to talk to my CA tomorrow about this.

But does anyone know where the get the info for while the car was in transit from the port to the dealer?

The county used the purchase date from the title paperwork which was the beginning of August in my case. It really comes down to when the vehicle has situs in the county.

In VA? That sounds too low for a whole year. What month did you start paying?

Ended up getting two months knocked off so far. I still think they're wrong since the car still wasn't physically garaged in VA. More to come...

They all get there money one way or another. MD has those 1.25-3.2% local income taxes and a higher initial sales tax on cars. Property taxes on real estate are higher in MD than VA. As an added bonus we can conceal or open carry on this side of the river.
