Eldor BMW OEM Coils 12138657273

First and most of all credit goes to Jklad about the new BMW OEM Coil for our cars. I am just confirming the findings, and yes I installed them on my car. Roads were a bit wet down here so wasn't able to go all out and not land into a palm tree

The NEW BMW ignition coil part number 12138657273 for the N54 is NOT made by Bosch, it is made by Eldor.

This part number is the same coil used many many many other BMW, Mini and Rolls Royce cars. Surprisingly it the same coil used on the new Rolls Royce Wraith that puts out 625 hp

Source: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...&q=12138657273

I had a bad batch of Bosch plugs I got that only lasted less than 2 months. I couldn't bare it anymore after I got a replacement plug but turned out most of the plugs were bad. So I gave up playing cat and mouse and just decided to go to the dealer to get the new coils

There is dramatically a BIG difference in quality between the Bosch/BMW vs the Eldor/BMW coil

The Eldor snugged more tightly on the plug and is significantly heavier and more solid than the previous Bosch version

Yes that is a black metal wrapping around the coil like the Delphi that is gray

I am running these with the new NGK plugs, discussion of that I posted in another thread but here is the quote for reference

Discontinued source: https://www.ngk.com/learning-center/...gk-spark-plugs

The specs say they are gapped at 0.8mm but they are not. http://www.ngk.com/product.aspx?zpid=39947 . I think they are using the old specs from the previous part number

They are actually gapped at OE spec gaping 0.7mm which I have verified with two different gaping gauges, ie coin style and wire style from AutoZone, for all 6 plugs

I installed them last night with a gap between 0.50mm - 0.55mm and all is good . I am currently at 500+ whp 600+ wtq ..............

Interesting. I wonder why BMW still uses the Delphi on some of their high performance applications like the M3, M4, X5M, X6M.

This is same as I got when I looked at our alternative BMW parts supplier here in Norway.

But I ordered the Delphis instead , way cheaper and should do the trick here.

If not , Eldors next

What is the benefit to these vs spending about $30 each for Delphi coils on Amazon?

Other than the $ difference, I would not know, or no one will know unless they run logs for both coils and they are inspected in hand for comparison.

Delphi coils were a better choice than the Bosch, no doubt, then this year BMW changed to Eldor instead of Delphi for all related cars including Rolls Royce. Another question is why not Delphi in their Rolls Royce ?

What do you think caused your Bosch coils to die after 2 months? Think it's the extra heat in the engine bay from the tune?

I just ordered a new set of Bosch coils as preventative maintenance, if I knew about these last week I would have certainly gotten Eldor coils instead.

IDK, but they have failed for many people within a short period of time. Since I am a torque junky that also may have aggravated the issue.

I think it's just quality control and less core winding compared to the Delphi and and Eldor coils

Whoever or wherever you got your backup coils from call up and ask if you can return them and pay the difference for the Eldor coils

FYI if you are covered by BMW warranty (normal, cpo, or wrap) BMW will only replace with parts (coil) spelled out for that particular model. They can not substitute. I just lost my 2nd replacement coil in 13,000 mi. Bosh installed, could not put Delphi in. 6 Eldor on order.

I wonder if it would be a bad idea to mix with existing with Bosch coils? Anyone know if it is recommended or required to swap out all 6 if switching to these?

Thanks for this - do you have information about dwell time? someone pointed out that the GN10328 coils have a longer dwell time vs OEM bosch N54 coils, so I wanted to know how the Eldors fare.

NGK gaping, nothing different from the traditional gaping. Personally me I gapped mine a bit more tighter. Between .020" - .022" gap is fine, just make sure to take.................. your................ time.................... and be delicate with the heads

I used another gauge to pry and set the gap

I am actually running 1 of these new Eldor coils with the rest being Bosch. Have had no issues car running strong.

I did notice the quality difference is very apparent. Also the metal part that contacts the spark plug seamed to a lot better quality that the Bosch as well.

Nope....The Eldor coils are the newest coils BMW onboarded so it made no sense to me to go with the previous.
