Winter tires and wheels

Looking for input on what winter tires or even tire/wheel package folks are running in the DMV area.

Also the car is supposed to come in late February or early March so contemplating if I can get by this winter without winter tires or not. The car will not be driven in snow or if there's a chance of snow if on stock tires and if on winters still do not plan to drive in snow. so basic question is how bad are the tires even in cold 20-40 degree weather. I had a s4 prior to this and was able to drive it all winter on stock 19 summer tires on dry roads (but did not drive the car in snow either as have a SUV for snow duty).

I bought the complete 640m setup. In my experience, you don't want to be caught in any bit of possible snow with summer tires on. I switch mine over for the simple fact that summer tires don't grip as well in cold temperatures. That's why they make performance winter tires. In your case you will probably be able to get by this winter, but getting a 70k car and being too cheap to buy the proper wheels doesn't make sense to me.

How far do you have to commute in a day? Until today I was rolling on the stock MPSS with pretty much no issues. Only traction issues when I was data logging some pulls. The MPSS compound is very hard and while looking at them today they're pretty much comparable to solid plastic.

IMO if you only plan on driving around in DRY cold weather with NO significant condensation on the ground. You'll be fine with the stock tires as long as you dont drive like an idiot.

For me, if it gets into the 40's I felt okay. 30's less okay, but okay after they warmup a bit. 20's no way, the tires are like plastic.

So I just drove today with stock conti's it was around 28~35 at the time. I was careful to avoid ice and snow as much as I could. I'll have to admit, it handled nicely but first thing when it gets clear out, I plan to swap my winter sets.

Reviving this question as the season is rolling around again. I have a new set of Enkei Raijin's I had gotten for my 335is, probably just keep them for the M4 (19x8.5 front, 19x9.5 rear).

I have a set of Blizzaks on them now I want to replace because they're old, and they're too narrow on these rims. Not sure if I want to get performance winter or just a great set of All Seasons. I'm leaning towards the latter, living in the DMV not sure if it's worth having full on winter tires.

Any All Seasons people are running they've been happy with through D.C. and NOVa winters?

I picked up an 18 M4 ZCP back in May with stock 437m rims. I've been going back and forth on tires for a few months now. Today was the first colder day that I've driven it and I'm definitely going to need to swap the summers. My dilemma is I feel like winter tires are over kill for NoVA especially since I have an Audi S4 to do all the really yucky driving (rain & snow).

For those of you with All-Season tires, are they sufficient for the winter or do you wish you had gone to dedicated winter tires? Any recommendations for All Seasons? I've had previously good experiences with Conti DWS06 and Michelin A/S 3+. I'd like to stay with the stock rims, which means keeping the staggered set up. Any advice is appreciated.

You have an S4 why even drive M4 when its cold/snowing?

I have no intentions of driving the M4 in the snow, except maybe donuts in a parking lot. But I didn't buy an M4 to have it sit in a garage from November to March/April when there is nothing wrong with the car other than the tires don't like the outside temperature. Its power is much more intoxicating than the S4. And bonus, it gets better gas mileage than my S4!

My point was it doesn’t snow or stay cold enough around here that you would need snows unless it was your only mode of transportation.

You have summers on your S4 too?

Pretty much agree.

I have Blizzaks and didnt even put them on last year. Wasnt cold enough. Shit James and I even drove to NJ in 30* weather + snow with our PSS on with no problem.

Every year I say I am going to get winter tires and every year I do not...

It is easier to get a beater, IMO. Plus you do not have to worry about the crazies who cannot drive in the snow hitting your car.

I still drive during the winter months with summer tires, but only after the roads have been cleared. Just do not drive (too much) like an ass when it is below 45 degrees and you should be fine.

I agree with the snow crazies. Personally, I don't want to be out in any car with them.

I guess i'll wait and see how I do with summers as it gets colder. I can always order tires later.

I'd wait and see. Snow/winter tires shouldnt be driven on temps above the mid/high 40s. Ideally consistent temps in the low or below 40s. The tread compound is specific for that temp and anything really higher is just burning the rubber away.

Man my girlfriend drove on blizzacks for nearly 3 years straight.
