ON Drivers - Don't forget your winter tire discount

Just a quick reminder to fellow ON drivers out there that all insurance providers are required to offer a winter tire discount for auto insurance policies written/renewed in the province as of Jan 1st.

My renewal is up in Feb and I was expecting a piddly 1% or so discount. However I was pleasantly surprised that Certas (aka State Farm) offered ~4.5% off the total policy cost in my case. Not a huge amount ($72 off a $1611 yearly premium) but worth mentioning to your agent if/when your policy is coming up for renewal.

I have TD Meloche Monnex auto insurance if you try and ask them to give you a credit for winter tires before renewal, they will not do it.....

Yeah this is a little sneaky, my agent would not apply the discount before renewal either but they did make a note so that it was automatically applied when the policy was up in Feb.

I would hazard a guess that if I got into an at fault accident or had a major traffic ticket/DUI conviction the insurance companies would not be waiting 6 months before adjusting my rate upwards. ;-)

Just sent a note to my State Farm agent letting her know that I had winter tires (Michelins X-Ice Xi3, for those keeping score at home).
Too bad my renewal is in October.

Hey, do you think I could tell her that I have winter tires on my Honda VFR?

Garage List
The discount is only applied on renewal for the same reason you only get charged premium increases on renewal.
