Msport Front and Rear upgrade 09 -> 10/11
Hey guys question for those that have done it. I've ordered the front and rear bumper and now I'm stuck with a few parts that I might or might not be needed.
Do I need the fender liners and brake cooling ducts? Yes, do not use the 335I parts you see in the other forums. The parts below don't fit Left Liner 51717892801 Right Liner 51717892802 Left Brake duct 51747891383 Right Brake duct 51747891380 Looking at Real OEM those pieces seem to be different than what the D calls for: These are what is needed Real OEM front liner page For vehicles with M Aerodynamics package S715A=Yes 08 Cover, bottom left 1 09/2008 51717892803 08 Cover, bottom right 1 09/2008 51717892804 Real OEM duct page For vehicles with M Aerodynamics package S715A=Yes 01 FRONT LEFT BRAKE AIR DUCT -M- 1 09/2008 51747891379 01 FRONT RIGHT BRAKE AIR DUCT -M- 1 09/2008 51747891380 I've been looking for hours and I can't find anyone that definitively writes about it (335i's are typically all I find) and nobody does an actual write up. Just a yep it fit but it wasn't straight forward. WRITE WHAT WAS DIFFERENT AND POP SOME PICTURES! For heaven's sake! I have the sport package currently, and the coolers for the 09 year. But its not definitive if those will work. I'd rather get the OEM parts that fit than hacksaw something that barely fits. Thanks in advance if anyone can help! One point, I put a complete parts list together I believe it was in 2013. Parts list is about 20 pieces long. In short answer to one of your questions you will need the liners and break docs as they vent into the wheelwell in different spots

I found your post (with CSSM), and that's where I pulled the M liners and brake ducts part numbers and checked with Real OEM. Thanks! I'll link it tomorrow

OP, what is your plan for getting front and rear bumper painted to match your car's paint? I have 2011 Msport (only year they produced them). The lower "chin" of the front panel is really scraped up. I don't even think it's repairable as the gouges are deep. I'm thinking of buying the OEM part and having it painted the same Spacegray metallic that my car is. I understand that the paint needs to be flexible so that it doesn't crack when the plastic flexes. One last thing: OP, Be damn careful parking with the lower nose you will have. Steep driveways and sidewalks adjacent to parking places are not your friends. Even those attached to pavement parking bumpers scrape bottom of the msport bumper. One time I pulled up to parking bumper at an angle and the bumper got hooked onto it. I didn't know this and backed up and luckily the plastic flexed or the bumper would have been torn off. It still bent the plastic and is a little distorted there. I lost the plastic rivets and had to install stainless screws to hold it to this triangular under panel. I like how the rear bumper has the removable lower diffuser. When I installed my uhaul hitch (for bike rack), It was much easier than I have read where others had to remove entire rear bumper cover to install. Good luck with the switch over. |

The paint shop I'm using uses the paint code (A61 Crimson Red), and there are 2 variants of it they used a swatch to check against (I had them order the rear bumper annnnd it was wrong, so paints off for another week). One was lighter, like a fire engine version and the other was a tint darker that was my Crimson.
For the front bumper I picked up the Vollkommen Front Lip; and while the shop kept asking about whether I wanted it painted or not (I kept saying no), I actually stumbled on another guy on this forum that had his painted gloss black. It turned out perfect, so I'll paint the lip and the rear performance valance in gloss black to match the black theme the Sport/ Msport model comes with (gloss black trim everywhere). I've seen you guys posting the fronts lower, so I figured I'd pick up the Polyurethane lip instead of the carbon fiber which would just end up cracked to hell. Thanks! Just curious, out of all the hardware posted above, what is absolutely necessary to order if switching to m tech front and rear? I am only talking screws and clips, etc.

I have that whole list coming and I'll sit at the body shop and try to get a bunch of pictures to see what is needed for future attempts. I will say that I'm doing it like it was OEM, so that'll mean you can probably skip the list of screws and bolts (you can probably reuse almost all the OE hardware from the old stuff). The rear bumper guides from what I've read on the 335i work (you just end up bending the tabs on it forcing it on). The only part thats a pain is the fender liners and cooling ducts if you wanted to hack them up and make them work. To add to the list I previously ordered the front bumper complete with all the grills and then ordered a set of OEM fog-lights for it and the bumper to under-pan extension piece. Looks like I have another week to wait, off the shipping estimate from ECS on the rear performance diffusor pieces. |

I'm really glad you're finding all this information out for us. I was actually planning on doing the MSport bumper myself this spring. Be sure to keep us updated with the part fitments.

Finally done.
I wasn't able to get the pictures like I hoped I would. Ran into some issues getting parts, and that moved time tables which meant I couldn't be there to see it being done. Front and Back M-Sport/ M-Tech bumpers Front Vollkommen Poly lip painted gloss black Rear BMW Performance diffusor painted gloss black Issues ran into were the passenger side cooler was a about a 1/2inch too big to fit next to the oil cooler, so it had to be modified. (Dremel new OEM brake cooler The foglights needed to have a H8 to 9006 harness retro'd. and the performance valance on the back through me for a loop since it wouldn't fit without modifying the back bumper. I'll attach the documents from BMW and some pictures I found. Overall I like it and think it gives the car a super aggressive look, compared to the stock 09 bumpers. |

glad someone showed some M sport love on a red car.
i am also glad your color is not vermillion red as I have a chance to do it too in my case I probably stick with chrome front grills, no rear trunk spoiler. not sure about front spoiler but i do kinda like it. I am also surprised stock rims look pretty good too with msport setup. how hard was the color matching? |

It came out really nice. Nose looks higher. Non msport suspension I guess. This may have it high enough to not scrape it. I hope so. Be careful with the nose and it looks great.

Turned out great! I finally got my bumpers in too. I am just waiting for the body shop to free up some space to schedule me. Did you do the install yourself, I'm guessing? Care to share what the paint and/or body work set you back?

Thanks everyone!
The color took three tries.... Apparently Crimson Red is one of the most difficult reds to match. A61 the color code, has two swatches of which are way off. So the shop had to call out the PPG rep to bring paint and have him take a look at the color. The suspension to my knowledge is the same with Sport and M-Sport, the only difference is the body package and the headliner being black. The car is low in the front its just deceiving since I popped a quick picture with my phone prior to parking it in the garage. As for the install, I didn't do it. The shop wanted $1200 for paint and the install (of which I believe was a steal), they were awesome dealing with everything and the stages it took to get it all. I still have to go back and get my passenger side headlight washer sorted. Its leaking somewhere. Also I'll say that the bottom belly pan isn't lining up with the extension piece, so I'm going to order another one and see how it fits. I'm also ordering a few pieces I thought would transfer over from the older stuff but didn't. - Rear DEF lid is different (Clarification on the DEF lid, if you look at the pictures of them side by side you'll clearly see they are different. The lip on the far side that clicks if you will and holds the cap in place is different. Now the stock lid will work, as thats what I currently have on. The issue is that the old lid sits forward in the hole and leave a 1/4inch gap on the backside.) - Front wheel defectors - Rear wheel cover pieces - Different belly pan adapter (Real OEM shows two different adapters on two separate pages...) |
