The Next Project.....

Here's something I've been working on for way too long (much like the exhaust! ), but it's nice to see it finally taking shape....

I started by digitizing this corner of the car, waterjetting in wood, now I'm up to metal. Fits great but still needs some tweaking.....Need to get the maf on the other side so I have some kind of room for a decent filter. Also, need to 3d print a receiver for the grill air intake. And drop the plexiglass down a bit for a better seal. I think these will look good in textured black powdercoat.....

Hahaa! Well it is a great insulator.....

But a person with your woodworking skills could just build it herself.

Does the snorkel still feed air into the enclosure?

Looks pretty good so far. Why go smaller on your prototype? The factory air box takes up all that space in front of the strut tower.

That adds a lot of extra angles to manufacture and really that will impact overall price when it's unnecessary with a cone style filter headed the other direction

Yup, that's the idea. So if you look closely half the snorkel is in and the other half out (other side). The goal is to 3D print a receiver that rivets (or the like) on the opposite side and seals the snorkel, directing the air in. That combined with the lid should make it very functional.

What Hess said. Larger wouldn't really benefit anything. And now you have room for a mini nitrous bottle, slim meth tank, 3rd turbo, etc.

Oh ok. I thought you were having a difficult time finding a cone filter to fit what you've already made.

Way long time ago, we had a forum member who got an enclosure custom made. I have forgotten that username. He sold his car and gave the enclosure over to Greek. I will go dig up those pictures. I thought Iaknown might want to compare to his prototype. It is so long ago that it might be over on the other diesel forum.

EDIT: no go on the pictures. I must have lost them on my old computer. Greek, can you please add those to this thread?

I don't see how you're gonna get a better filter in there. I've done alot of fancy airbox stuff with with my diesel trucks and the object of the exercise was always to get either a bigger filter and/or better airflow with the same or better efficiency.

He could just run a duct to the fog grill. That's been proven quite a few times in the BMW world.

I like that too. TDIwyse has shown the OEM duct gets outpaced.

What if the filter has more surface area than oem and/or is more efficient? If there are filters out there that filter just as well as OEM but flow more (there are) or have more surface area because of a different shape (say a cone filter), then it's an improvement. I just need to find one that fits

I have some theories about that (that may or may not be correct lol). But you guys are giving me ideas. Great, now I need to make revisions. I've just extended the project another 6 months ha.....
