Buying replacement Swirl flaps
My swirl flaps are leaking oil.
Can you buy replacement ones from BMW? Having trouble finding them on the exploded view........ |

Yes, looks like they are part of the inlet manifold.

Careful. It depends where the leak is coming from the flaps. The rectangular port gaskets are certainly replaceable. If leak coming from pivot axis of flap, then perhaps another flap needed. I will go consult a link I have and let you know.

Here is the link I consulted.
http://5series.net/forums/diy-do-you...-engine-53457/ see pictures #10, #11, and #12. I removed my flaps and cleaned them as part of overall intake cleaning. Dental pics and lots of carb cleaner got the job done. That close up of the removed and cleaned flap looks like it has a brownish/orange sleeve around it for sealing it into the intake manifold bore. Sorry, no pictures. Just what my mechanic tells me.
BMW should be covering this under their warranty but they're weasling out of it at the moment. |

I'm pretty sure that the European swirl flaps are different than the US flaps - certainly the drive is electrical in the USA/CA. This is detailed in the various training docs that have been posted.

Concerning that link I posted. The guy who wrote the 5 series based M57 intake removal thread is in Finland. So, the swirl flaps shown are European but may or may not match your 335D specific ones. My North American ones don't have the orangish looking plastic on the butterflies themselves. Mine are all metal with plastic body and rubber seal that the butterfly seals against.
I had some oil too but nothing externally leaking though. I have catch can so hopefully the oil is way slowed down now. Another thread going where guy shows his swirl flaps and they are really caked up. He has North American car as his profile says British Columbia. |
