swirl flap delete/ intake manifold cleaning

Had my swirl flaps deleted with a delete kit the tuner had gotten from the us for $250 as well got the intake manifold cleaned after 170,000 (first clean) as you can see from the photos it was packed with gunk. Tuner had told me one of the swirl flaps was close to breaking due to so much soot build up. Egr was disabled as well, hopefully less gunk will go through the system.

Can you please show us the delete plates? I recall they are 33 mm for our intake. I was hesitant to do this when I was planning intake cleaning. Euro guys do it to get rid of risk regarding screws coming off the flaps. Our N/A flaps don't have the screws problem.

I'm wondering if the actuator that slides the rod forward and aft is now disconnected or actuator still connected and not pushing/pulling rod.

For others unfamiliar, the rod is pinned to all 6 swirl flaps and simultaneously opens and closes them when driven by actuator.

Pretty sure that if the rod was seized and could not slide back and forth that would throw a code. (I would bet money on it) You could throw the plates in and re install the swirl valve actuator and the car wouldnt know the difference... As long as the motor could travel in its directional path.. From what I remember the rod pops out quite easily.

Glitdi, We are saying same thing but I wasn't clear. I'm asking OP if he kept the actuator plugged into harness and it is just free wheeling with no rod connected OR is the actuator not plugged into harness. I'm with you that ECU would fuss not seeing the actuator online.

I have taken all of this apart and cleaned but put back all of it as I didn't see any positives to deleting flaps. I had read of low end performance hit. I have no data to support low RPM degradation though.

OP, we would like the hear how your performance is. It will be a definite mixed bag of results though. You will run better with the intake runners cleaned. Are you cleaning head ports too? The round ports on the intake being so loaded down make me think the head side of the round ports is loaded similarly. Point I'm making is the resulting throttle behavior will be mix of cleaned intake and swirls gone. Good luck on vast improvement.

As someone from the UK who has deleted his swirl flaps I can confirm there is no low end performance hit. I removed the vacuum line to the actuator and plugged it and left the rod in situ.

Not entirely sure of the differences of my 335D to your US models but mine looks identical to these pictures.

Certainly not heard of an electric actuator. That may be US specific for later models.

I have a project restoration thread in the UK section with a few pics showing the 33mm blanks.

Seems our UK diesel doesn't give the same carbon fouling shown here. Take a look at my manifold it was a little oily but not carbon caked. I have 160000 miles. EGR still intact.

Hope that helps.

$250!

You can buy a kit including all seals for £30 on eBay.

Shipping would be a little more to the US but not to the tune of $200.

I bought the swirl delete kit but was hesitant to install as the euro models seem to differ in some parts as our US models. What sensor stays and what gets deteted or vac lines?

JohnnyB,
I have some NA swirl flaps that I can measure but pretty sure the 33 mm ones are right size. This system doesn't have sensors but the actuator is electric and hooks up to engine harness (no vacuum lines). We were discussing above if the actuator stays connected to harness but we think you wouldn't install the long rod that it slides fore and aft to actuate the OEM swirl flaps. This is a speculation on our part.

Note, the OP in very first post says his tuner did the work. It wasn't stated whether the swirl flaps were coded out or not by the tuner.

Thanks cuda, I guess I'll wait to see more on this before I install. BPC has my ECU maybe I'll pick bobs brain and see if he can tune out the swirl. CUDA you always have some great info

I took one of the swirl flaps out of my spare intake. The bore in the manifold measured 32.89 mm. The 33 mm ones will work. I was surprised that the flaps are fairly clean as I ran it for ~45,000 miles. It's been blocked for last 13,000 miles and I've always changed oil at 3000 to 4000 miles. Maybe I will clean this manifold up and put the delete plates on it. It would be interesting to run a back to back test with all else identical, same day, same tank of fuel. I've never driven at race track before. I would have to calibrate myself to not throw off the comparison.

Callahan, I added some info to your build thread over on UK tech forum

Some say without pictures, it didn't happen. Here is what I meant by bore diameter for the swirl flaps. This is the hole in the intake where the swirl flap is inserted.

IF somebody removes fairly newish flaps 2009+ I want them PM me. I truly believe that you should not remove them. You will lose low end power.

^You can have mine.

PS: tuners keep them bypassed/ open. I have plenty of low end torque...

So it is worth deleting the flaps then? Any negatives?
The kits are cheap on ebay...
I removed my intake manifold today and noticed I have oil seeping out from the swirl flap rods

I had the flaps removed about 1 week ago from my car by BPC, my 335d had 28k miles when this was done and had a fair bit of carbon. If anyone is interested in buying the flap actuator motor, pm me.
