Sound Deaden Z4M Roadster

Anyone go through the trouble of sound deadening a Z4M roadster? At a minimum I'm considering doing the trunk with Dynamat Xtreme or SecondSkin Pro.

I'm just tired of the road noise and from what I can tell most of the road noise is coming from the rear tires.

Any experience?

Your road noise is coming from the fact that it is a roadster. Sound deadening a roadster is putting lipstick on a pig.

That said, I did mat my trunk, but only because I'm running a system and wanted as much insulation in there as possible. I did not do it for road noise reduction, as all that noise is going to come mostly through your soft top.

LOL.... funny but true.
I've matted other cars but not my M Roady.
JMO but it's not worth the effort & added weight.

Why would you want to get rid of the road noise/engine/exhaust noise?
I love hearing my car work...makes it more raw/race car like

No experience with it. I think if the noise is bothersome, you may have bought the wrong car. As for me, I'm beginning to wonder how long I can stand it before I remove all sound insulation material. I want to hear the tires scream, the diff whine, the engine sing, the airbox suck, the vanos rattle, the valves tap, etc...

There's a difference between liking the roadster feel and just road noise at 80-90 on the freeway. I'm not talking about exhaust or engine or drivetrain. I'm talking about tire noise on rough roads. This can be addressed, and I was curious if anyone else had.

Deadening isn't going to help you if tire noise is a concern. Deadening helps with the 'ambient' road noise, like wind and other cars. Your tires are the connection between the road you car, so the only way to soften up that noise is different tires which boast a quiet ride as one of their perks.

Out of curiosity, are you still running the stock tires or run-flat tires? They are notorious for loudness, among their other faults. (not that they don't have benefits too, everything is a tradeoff.)

The car actually has a lot of sound deadening already and is amazingly quiet for a roadster. Most of the noise is coming through the cloth roof and there is nada you can do about it. If you think a Z4 roadster is noisy, try an MGB...

I took off the runflats when I installed my 19" M6 reps with General Exclaim UHP tires. Was the sound difference noticeable? Yes...barely.

I'm young and I always have my stereo on so road noise isn't really a big deal to me I guess.

I have used it before and would not want the extra weight for the minimal benefit. You would be looking at over 60lbs+ to do it right...

I've been considering something like this if I can do it without adding too much weight. I love the sound of the engine, but on long trips the constant road noise is pretty loud.

Would seem that the biggest wins would be adding a bit of sound dampening to the doors (see ron stygar's link here) and maybe some to the trunk; since I think both of these sites have none by default. Ron commented that it gets rid of a lot of the road noise.

You could always get a light weight battery and make up the weight that you add. Future project involves getting one of those super light lithium batteries and fabricating a much smaller holder for it + covering to recover some space in the trunk.

What is the best light-weight sound dampening material? Dynamat makes a SuperLite product, Ron used Damplifier Pro, found some press releases for Henkel Terophon HD but can't find where to buy it or any reviews on it.

you need thick sound dampening anyway, research which tires are the quietest and buy them next

beta, i have sound deadened my trunk with one layer of dynamat extreme and another layer of ensolite. the areas i applied a layer of each to were the main trunk floor directly above the mufflers and on the flat floor right next to the battery stump. i have a coupe though which does account for noticeable differences as compared with a roadster, but u would definitely have to sound deaden a lot more than just the trunk (in my case) if you're looking to eliminate road noise.

i'd go with the suggestion of quieter running tires if tt is a viable option.

I actually just bought the Michelin PSS, and they're way quieter than stock. According to tirerack they're close to as quiet as they're gonna get for a high performance summer tire.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I thought the doors would be a win since according to Ron they don't have any (the Z3 even had some sound dampening in there).

Thinking about it, wheel wells might be a really good option. Probably the least amount of material, and it won't affect the weight distribution of the car much. Thoughts?

When I got Michelin PS2s for my m3, the difference was incredible. It felt like a brand new car. I'd recommend PSS since PS2s are discontinued.

When restoring my 240-Z I used 3 rolls of Dynamat against the sheet-metal in the entire car. That included inside the door cans, upper and lower roof, B-pillars,quarter panels and fender arches in the rear. I also did the inner walls of the hatch as well as outside the car just above the muffler and exhaust tubing under the car.

Result ?? Huge difference in the interior decibel rating reduction. I could now drive the car with windows down at 90mph + and speak to a passenger with a non-strained voice.

Penalty= about 9lbs. But I could shave that with CF parts no problem.

I actually have a Decibel meter and will attempt some 'before & after' testing when I do the same to my Z4 coupe.(maybe this Winter).

I tried doing sound deadening in my '06 Z4MR. After applying the materials to the trunk floor, entire cabin and hardtop, with the hardtop on I thought it helped a little and was a little quieter. With the hardtop off? Didn't matter at all. If you still want to attempt doing sound deadening, "closed-cell foam" is a good lightweight alternative.

Short of getting a hardtop, you're simply not gonna be able to make the roadster's interior much quieter. If it's the road noise from the tires that bothers you, just get different tires with less road noise.

Not true, you can buy a hardtop option and do this to the headliner of aformentioned Hardtop....enjoy.
