228i on H&R only dropped 1/2"
So, I installed H&R springs on my 228i this weekend. I have an M Sport, so I was expecting 1" front and .8" rear per H&R's website. What I've gotten, however, is right around 1/2" all the way around, maybe a little more in the rear. Measured from fender to center of the roundel on the wheel I went from 13.5" to 13" on the fronts and 13.5" to about 12.875" in the rear.
As far as I know, I installed everything correctly. Everything with the seats/perches was lined up nicely and I loaded up the suspension to retorque everything. I do know that the springs are the same as the M235i springs, so I'm not totally surprised they lower less when installed on a 228i, but half the advertised height? Any 228i owners with H&R springs willing to measure their front/rear ride height from fender to wheel center and see if I've got an issue? |

yup. need to let it settle.
do you have passengers frequently in your car? if so, it may only take a few days to settle. i rarely do, so i usually give it a good week or so.

I always knew things settled for a while, but never figured it would settle nearly half an inch. Seems a bit much to me, but I guess I'll find out soon enough.
And no, I rarely have passengers, but I did take a 200 mile round trip with my wife the day after I finished. No change before/after the ride. |

Of course nobody here would ever suggest that your wife sitting in it would have ANY effect on lowering the car.
If you want the car to settle in a hurry, I am willing to offer you the services of my mother-in-law.

Two things to keep in mind: 1) those spring are not designed specifically for 228i (228i is not even listed in their certificate), different loads, 2) when used on a vehicle with M-Sport suspension they lower about 15 mm less than what you'd expect with a standard suspension (which is mentioned in the certificate).

These are the same springs that lower the M235i by 1" front and rear, so I don't really see how it's possible the 228i would be lowered the same (specially in front with a 50% larger engine). I just want to be sure I have the right parts and didn't screw up the install causing the discrepancy in ride height. |

Just checking back in. It's been a couple of weeks now and the ride height is exactly the same. Not the slightest amount of settle. I've come to be OK with the height it's at I guess, but I still wonder what set of circumstances lead to the unexpected drop amount.
Can anyone with my trim level (228i M Sport) and H&R springs measure their height from fender to wheel center cap? Thanks! |
