Losing my freakin mind, this car is killing me. Now Crank shaft pulley?

So I got my stage 3 done....one problem after another fixed.... I finally get my car back today.... Drive it..theres a little lag going on in the low rpm range...not sure why...

Im driving a friend and all of a sudden I lose power steering for a moment....then I smell burnt rubber.... We park the car...I look under the hood...cant see anything wrong... wait a couple hours for things to cool off and I get ready to go home... No power steering and battery charging failure....obviously something going wrong with serpentine... I assume tensioner.... but the belt is still nice and tight...nothing going on there...but NOTHING is turning...not even the main pulley... but the engine is idling just fine...

Please tell me there is a guibo involved in the main pulley and its easy to take out and change.....please.....

EDIT: I posted this in my panic...I googled...found the rubber backed pulley.....know its something I can do if needed...but am more concerned that I have a locked up water pump or something that caused this to fail......

Classic harmonic balancer pulley failure. Mine failed at 67 K miles. When you replace the pulley, it is a good idea to replace the two belts at the same time.

It is not something that you did or the tune. The OEM pulley is of poor quality.

Thank you for the support...seriously...I nearly cried tonight...but there is no crying in BMW ownership...so I toughed it out.... i am still a bit terrified that a pump isnt locked up which tore up the pulley.

I know you made a comment in the big thread about changing belts when they slip....thing is...teh belts arent slipping....nothing is moving at all...the only thing moving is the shaft under the harmonic balancer...so im probably going to leave my belts...esp the a/c one... unless you tell me the process of changing this thing requires AC belt to be removed..

If you're going to remove the serpentine belt or harmonic balancer, the a/c belt must be removed.

okay, I figured that might be the case, but I could replace the old belts if I so choose, right?

Yes, it is your choice. Now that I know more about the failure mode, it is likely that the belts did not slip in my car. The dealer replaced the two belts as a precaution measure when replacing the pulley. Anyway, I think it is a good idea to replace because the belts are not that expensive.

Hey Cuda,
Yeah I ran across that thread you started that list on. Im at 107k...but I just did the big stage 3 switch....plus Im slightly worried that I lost a pump of some sort and that may have contributed significantly to the failure. So I wasnt sure if mine belonged in that group (even though Im on the top end of the failures)

I think your car does belong in the group. If your water pump seized up, the bearing would have been squealing or making some sort of noise leading up to failure. You won't know for certain until you have it all apart. My bet is the water pump is fine and will spin freely. I sort of wonder if your pulley was at the hair trigger point of failing and then you went for stage 3.

Cortego 80001103 follow on story. First here is a web site that is in german but I was able to put it in the cart (but with one trick).
https://www.motointegrator.de/warenkorb/

This German vendor's site didn't work right if you click the translate to English button. I couldn't put the part in the cart. I used an ap on my phone to translate from German to English real time using the phone's camera. I then was able to do all if the transaction mechanics with the site in german "mode". My motive was to get the final cost shipped to my doorstep.

I'm hesitant to recommend the Corteco 80001103 as we can only go by what was written in some Russian forums. Those forums say that dampner failures are more common on diesels (thanks again Lexx). My point of mention is I found a German website that showed this part for approx 219 Euro (converts to $247 USD according to Google). I even put it in cart and did the Paypal option and it came up to $254 delivered to my house. I did not do the confirm on Paypal though i.e. I didn't buy it. I'm looking at buying a spare for if/when mine goes bad.

Omaha, this would have to be on you as to whether you trust Corteco. Are they the real manufacturer and BMW name is ground off? I've read stuff that says it is but I can not guarantee that. One other important point. I do not know if this motointegrator website is selling the updated damper or the 1st generation Cortego. I just ran into the paralysis by analysis wall and stopped.

Ultimately, I guess I wasn't willing to risk $254.

Just take this with a grain of salt. BB_cuda, I had that Russian forum post translated and it did point to Corteco being the OEM with the p/n ground off, but we will never know until we compare one to another.

I know my Vaico one will fail sooner or later as I'm starting to get variations in noise and it changes with a/c on or off and now as soon as I start the car power steering is smooth and then a minute later I get a bit of hesitation from the p/s pump when turning the wheel. Febi, being the Bilstein group, should be better, but going from the pics it does not have vent holes at the back. I would be trying Corteco, they are around 220-250 Euros on the other side of Atlantic.

Checked pics in this thread https://www.drive2.ru/l/6760454/
against my OEM pics that I had posted in another thread and they look very much identical. Poster in that thread also mentioned and showed pics of OEM p/n filed off. As such, the conclusion is that Corteco is most likely the OEM supplier to BMW.

if you are doing heavy tuning i recommend you to check you timing chain and it's tensioner bit earlier than 250k km, otherwise you'll have to replace whole engine

All,
First I want to thank the group for chiming in on this post and giving me the direct info that all of you had come across over the last couple years.

Second.... Before I decided if I was taking it home or to the shop, I pulled the belts off to confirm that all of my accessories were not locked up and all were functioning properly. All was well thankfully.

After taking it very slow, and having to stop to charge the battery a couple times, I got the car to my garage in my house. Engine temp wasnt bad at all when i got home.....but its a nice cool breezy day here...and I had taken that scoop shroud off of the "ram air" so all the driving air was going into the engine bay.. Risky yes...but trust me, the day before when it broke just as I was getting on the interstate was WAY worse...I didnt realize it until i got off the interstate... steering isnt a problem at 80....I mean....the posted limit.

I called these guys to ask about OEM brand....they inquired as to manufacturer and they said that the part was from an OEM manufacturer in Germany....https://www.horsepowerfreaks.com/oem...151362286.html

But after that, I ended up going with this "OEM" which is seemingly the exact same thing as horsepowerfreaks has http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/201...ft_pulley.html

I will report back with images of the part when it arrives. I agree with Yozh's conclusion, that Corteco is indeed the OEM... but I found no supplier in the USA that was substantially cheaper than Husker at 440... These guys were cheaper but I assume shipping of 15 lbs wouldnt be too cheap http://oemparts4export.com/new-bmw-1...per-)--corteco

Ill update this thread when it arrives.
