How do I lock the car in 3rd gear for a dyno pull

Been developing some tunes for the our 335d with a colleague of mine and we cannot get a proper dyno run.
in third gear the car continues to down shift with low rps when trying to do a full pull on the dyno..
Any ideas?

Wait, you're tuning 335d's but can't do a dyno pull?

Most dyno operators will put in 4th or 5th (1:1) depending on dyno speed limitations. Try M4 and ease into it. Shouldn't take but a few tries to figure out the correct pedal input to avoid downshift...

Put it in DS and manually shift in to 2nd, go into 3rd but hold the stick in the upshift position, it will hold it in that gear, works on all gears but 1st

Don't blow up your engine....

You just need to get the car to 100% throttle (100% fuel I suppose on a diesel). Which is not the same as actually flooring it. Typically the way most people will dyno an automatic car is to manually select a gear, then depress the throttle till just before you reach the kick down point for the automatic. The car actually will run at 100% output, and when you push further your just activating the transmission kick-down.

Thanks for the help guys....

I am not the one developing the tune Mark Malone has, we are doing some tweaking for my own personal wants and needs. He has a hub mounted dyno system and we cannot get it to stop downshifting on the dyno. I know he has tuned a quite a few cars on that dyno and the european company that sold it to him trained him and his staff on how to use it. We are just trying to eliminate all variables.
Your right its not third gear my bad... Any other flaming I need to address?

Just trying to see if anyone else has had similar experiences with dyno pulls. Most likely going to have to put it on to a 4 wheel roller dyno instead.

Glitdi did u not read my post? You can use that method for any gear, when u manually upshift just hold the shifter in the upshift postion, it will hold it in that gear

Will this work on the street? If so, this will make data logging much easier for me!

That's awesome, I always wondered about that. Just to let it rip low rpm is quite gratifying sometimes.

Update... been out of the country for a while..We are going to try to do another dyno run next time around, when the rest of the parts come and some parts fall off for no apparent reason what so ever...
Stage one tune is done, no mods, a few new tricks that will be interesting to some, will be coming.
Drove the car with the stage 1 tune for the first time on Saturday, literaly 5 mins in to having my car on the road, Merging onto the freeway got clocked doing 40 over the speed limit... Dammit... Big ass ticket, 7 day impound... Not a great way to start a roadtrip with the family, imagine an irate 335d owner, at the side of the road transferring two little girls, all the traveling gear into a rx8 on the side of the 3 lane highway with 2 cop cars and a tow truck waiting.
Cop was kinda dicky, could have given me a break, but he had to make his quota I guess..
I get the car back sunday, which also happens to be my birthday...

Had to take the Rx-8 through the states instead.... Really wasn't happy about it.. I was really looking to some open road, in my diesel powered rocket.
Next step investing in a really expensive radar/detector/ laser jammer thing....With great torque comes great responsibility..
Anyone have any experience with laser/rader detectors? looking for the type that I have to install sensors externally for a stealth setup....

Yeah, in our city they drink coffee, babysit bums and play Spielbergs at the movie shoot sets all the time until it's end of the month, then they get into groups of 5-10 cops, and make their monthly quota. Sux.

Yeah man. FOR SURE get a radar detector can't leave home without it. The new escort 360 is Escort live even updates you with oncoming speed traps. Anybody hardwire their detectors on here? Advice?

40 over the freeway speed limit is pretty excessive, especially with your 2 little girls in the back, seems pretty irresponsible to me. Nothing a radar detector can fix.......

Ya where I'm at most freeways are 65, so 40 over is 105, I'm suprised they let u go, I think where I'm at they arrest u and impound ur car on the spot, and it's 2 points on ur record, u got lucky...

Yeah. Just pay attention to the road and be safe. I agree 40 over is excessive but we have all been there once or twice before and could be in the same boat... I like to cruise at 80 for best mpg. Radar detectors are preventative measures but not 100% effective. I skimmed over didn't see the two girls in the back seat part... Lol
