New guy, new to me 2011 335d!

Ciao from Sicily, Italy! I'm an American working in Italy. Since my wife and I have been living here, we have been driving a 2002 e46 320d Touring and a 1999 SLK200. I love the diesel 320, it has high miles and still gets a respectable 6.5 liters/100km (36 MPG) at 220,000km! I perform all my own maintenance and know the BMW diesel motor pretty well now. I am hooked on diesel! I've been drooling over the 335d for quite some time now. I dropped the dime and purchased a US spec 2011 335d with 39K miles for use back in the states. My wife has been driving it for a week and absolutely loves it! I don't get to drive it until the end of this month, and can't wait! Titanium silver, comfort, cold and convenience packages w/NAV. Great, aggressive but not over the top. I plan to keep this car for a long time. Thanks for having me. No pictures of the 2011, but here is one of my 320d and 200SLK.

Thanks DSB!

The 3.0 liter six is the way to go, especially in this iteration. This engine has been used for a long time here in Europe. My buddy has a 2001 530d with very high miles and still runs extremely strong. I couldn't justify a new 328d (2.0 liter) touring model based on initial cost with less performance. I understand the uncertainty of the DPF system, I am a mechanic by trade and can take care of issues myself. Are there any recalls that I should be aware of before I go back stateside? Any work I can get BMW to do will save me some time. Thanks in advance!

View of Mt. Etna from my house!

A little disconcerting the first time I saw Etna erupt! I enjoy the local wine and it's a lot easier to tolerate!

How do you buy a US-spec 335d in Europe? Just be cautious, even if it's really a EU car with US-spec emissions doesn't mean you can easily import it. There are lighting, restraint systems, and other things that have to meet US standards.

The only real recall that was ever done was in 2011 for the EGR, SCR Mixer (injector at the bottom of the DPF/SOC cannister), DDE program and SCR Catalyst.

If you can find a DEF tank that is in good shape and cheap, bring it as you may eventually need it.

He said "for use back in the states". I'm assuming he has a second home or is moving back to the states.

I've been a BMW and diesel fan for a long time...

My previous diesels have been Duramax truck diesels (2006 and 2012) that were bullet proof. My 02 320d has been a good car, but only after I sorted out the years of maintenance neglect. I feel that I am experienced enough on the Euro diesel maintenance to tackle anything that may come up with the 335d (US Spec). I understand the DPF system can be a headache, but that can be dealt with as well. I believe keeping the DPF system topped off with fluid will help keep the system from having heavy urea crystal deposits, causing premature pump / sensor wear. The system is an after thought anyway, to see it go away permanently wouldn't hurt my feelings. I don't have to deal with it here. My 320d has a cat delete mod and runs very well (I can't wait to drive that 3.0 liter!) I love low end torque, can't get enough. I will be using the forum from time to time, thanks. Did I say I like torque?

Thanks for the info on the US Spec recall for 2011..

it is a US spec 335d for use back state side. I am a US citizen working in Italy. The car has a good pedigree with only 39K on it, ad should be current on any recalls. Great engine, DPF or not!

You mean DEF or SCR, I'm pretty sure. Alphabet/abbreviations:
DPF - Diesel Particulate Filter
OCC - Oxidation Catalytic Converter (in same cannister as DPF)
SCR - Selective Catalytic Reduction - uses DEF (ammonia/urea) to reduce NOx
DEF - Diesel Exhaust Fluid
EGR - Exhaust Gas Recirculation

DEF system, DEFinitely!

Have to get my terminology correct! Thanks Floyd! My wife has been driving it now for a little over a week. I originally said is was titanium silver, my bad, it's "space grey". I like it better, I have two light silver cars here in Italy. Thanks Larry! I'll contact you after I arrive in DFW the end of May.
