(Update regarding flash) Hessitation in lower gears

I've seen a similar thread on this where if you are in comfort mode and using manual mode, that there is a hesitation in the lower gears during hard acceleration. I've run into it intermittently in 1st thru 3rd but have wrote it off as a side effect of the tune as no issues if I'm in Sport.

I also posted this in the general by accident:

http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1261413

Anyway, took in yesterday for 20k service and asked about it. Tech issue is under:
Shifting issues, power drops off or hesitates.
-SIB 12 09 15 (ENCODED CONTROL UNITS).

They still have it as they are currently talking with BMW about the issue...but the tranny appears to be throwing codes so something is going on.

On the bright side, I've been driving a brand new 435 M-Sport Coupe and it looks like I'll have it through the weekend. Nice way to test out a sweet ride! I already miss the quickness of my 2er though...

Hope this helps someone else.

if it's getting codes I have to believe you. otherwise I'd just chalk it up to the slight turbo lag that exists.

good luck and thanks for sharing. will def be checking back.

It's defiantly not lag, only happens in comfort mode and lower gears. Can't believe it's taking this long...been in the shop since Wednesday.

I can confirm that the software update took care of the hesitation in the lower gears. Shifts coming home were crisp. Can't tell you how small my 2 felt after being in the 435 coupe for a week...I missed it!

They did pick up that I had a tune while running the DME checks...nothing said about warranty.

I almost always drive in EP mode on the highway to save gas, and on the way to work this morning, I noticed that I have a different Efficient Dynamics information since the flash:

Additionally, my mpg has gone up by about 4mpg, maybe a result of the TCU update? The flash also caused me to loose many settings that I had coded in, so I'm wondering if the flash contained ECU and TCU updates...Interesting.

Do you think all 228s will get this update? I'm due soon.

I gave my service manager the notice number and told him that I was having issues with the lower gears and hesitation.

Do I think they are checking everyone, no...I had my car in a month ago for a window thing and they didn't check.

I didn't know they could make a custom software update for an issue

This is really interesting. You had an ECU flash update for a transmission issue, and Zooks527 recently had an ECU flash update (his dealer called it a warranty "software recall") to his M235xi out of course that he had aftermarket-amplifier compatibility issues with. Here's the thread on his experience.

He's noted some differences in Navigation options, album art image retention, and A/C fan speed patterns, but that's it.

Zooks: do you have the revised ECO PRO gauge layout?

I'm wondering if this is the same recall -- and if it is, it means it's not specific to the 228 or the 235. It's 2 Series-wide.

How'd they pick up the tune?? From the OBDII port? From keyfob info?

Hopefully they don't flag your car for later inspection.......

I'm not sure it is just for the TCU, but there is another post in this forum where I found the information regarding -SIB 12 09 15 (ENCODED CONTROL UNITS).

Can't seem to find it again, but the other op had the same hesitation issues I experienced. It also wiped out most of my coding including door locks, welcome messages in I Drive, Halo Brightness and TPMS temp. Not sure how far it reached, but I wanted to let the forum know.

During DME diagnostics, several tamper alerts came up. The service manager called me at work to confirm that I had a "tune" to ensure nothing else was out of wack, then they ran across other error codes which they sent back to the motherland requesting guidance.

I also hope I haven't been flagged, it didn't appear that they really cared but more that they were just trying to diagnose the issue.

If Zooks527 looks at his service invoice, he can tell us the software # and see if it matches mine.

Additionally, I'm still above 35mpg after putting around town tonight and I was not being easy on it, not sure what to make of that...

Wow. Certainly answers the question of "Can BMW tell a flash tune has been done?" doesn't it? At least an Enzo tune...

I have not had my car in Eco Pro mode for months, so I'm not sure I'd recognize a change. But, I'll take a look tomorrow and see if it looks like the photo above. Although, to be honest, that's kind of what I remember it looking like before.

Mine had always shown the 10, 20, 30....mpg just like the other modes.

Unfortunately, no confirmation that it's the same or different. Mine reads in total:

#5 - RECALL: PERFORM OPEN RECALL(S)
PERFORM OPEN CAMPAIGN TO PROGRAM CONTROL UNITS

.
Corrected by (0066130100)
Work performed by (technician's name and employee number)
PERFORMED PROGRAMMING RECALL

Two different SAs at the dealership did not know what was involved in the flash change. I did lose some of my settings (lights, flashers, speed alarm setting, navigation history, etc.) and kept others (custom buttons, profiles, seat positions, address book, song library, navigation saved locations, etc.). I noticed changes in the Navigation options (adding Toll Transponder and Carpool Lane options), and my car no longer loses the album cover display if it's parked between 3 minutes and 6 hours with the system left in Media mode. I think the A/C fan control logic has changed, but as that is so conjoined with the conditions outside the car, it's hard to know if it's really changed or I'm just being over critical.

OK, just went for a swing around the block, and I'll confirm that my Eco Pro gauge looks exactly like that.

As I said, though, I can't really say if it was ever any different before the flash. From the few times I did use it, I don't really remember it have the MPG decades shown in the other modes. If you made me swear in court about it, I'd have to say my impression is that it didn't change. I do drive an M235xi though, but I'm not sure why that would make a difference for the display.

EDIT: I just pulled up my manual (2015 2-series). That's how it looks in the manual as well: no MPG decades.
