I'm 44 and have owned probably 30+ cars...from lifted suburbans and trucks to the original m3 when I was 20 (god why did I sell that) and and a bunch of audis (from all roads to rs4s) and volvos, mercedes and vw along the way....the stable these days is simply the 2011 335d Msport and a 435 gran coupe...still love the D / in fact this is the only car I've owned for more than 3 years...I'm also surrounded by new m3s and 4s and while I admire them...love walking up to my d and getting behind the wheel / what a great car....that's all...carry on
Ps: what would I replace it with....new raptor or a tesla other than that it stays with me |

I have two 335d cars in the family....bought one for my daughter and liked hers so much I took a $4,000 trade-in hit to buy myself one.
Coming from mostly Japanese cars (got 323,000 miles from a 1980 Nissan 200sx) I am used to my cars not breaking. When these cars RUN, they are AWESOME !! But they break too much !! Between my two 335d cars, they have been in the shop (combined) about 8 times in 13 months of total usage. I saw someone call them "the diesel experiment on wheels" and for the US version, I do believe that to be true. I've literally spent more on warranty deductibles and one non-covered $2655 repair than I have spent fixing the other 17 cars I owned before these two cars (I'm 52.) And two expensive bumper-to-bumper extended warranties are still getting paid off. So yes, they are awesome. But the emissions system, wiring, hoses, etc are fairly fragile. I'm happy, but trending DOWN in that area. If we can get a few months of no break-downs, it might start trending up again. |

I really liked your post, but did not mean to 'appreciate' it three times. Unsure what happened there.

Agree with you OP, i've had mine for 3 years and luckily haven't had any issues apart from a turbo actuator (common) and a few minor bits and pieces. I think the Euro versions like mine are generally more reliable?
Anyways i love my car its perfect and wouldn't swap it for any other, that includes the new F series. |

No problems here other than routine maintenance and misc typical items that will come from a 2011 bmw / smooth sailing / we are quick to comment on our complaints vs our compliments

I love my 335d M-sport. I have had two friends make me serious offers to buy the car. My thought process is, "what can i replace it with" There really is no car I am interested up to 35K that I would replace this car with. Originally I was in the market for a c63 or e92 M3. The performance of those cars is comparable. And we literally get double the mileage in our Diesel . When the car gets old it would probably a tesla that I replace it with. I know this car certainly is not for everyone. But there really is nothing like it out there.

I have 45,000 miles on the car, put on 30k of those. Love the car, only one SCR tank replaced, all other maint. was routine. Drive it everyday and love it. I might end up selling it to lean out the cars in the stable, but not for a lack of fondness. I def. haven't been hit with the numerous issues of other folks... But I am still below that 60k Mark and under CPO anyway ha. Enjoy the ride

I've owned quite a few sport-luxury cars, the 335d is the one that impresses me the most to this day. So I have owned it for over 5 years and haven't got rid of it. Hands down the best daily driver car I've ever owned. 2nd to this I would say my previous E39 M5, however, it's not as fun when you have to fill the tank. Also, no cars I've owned has the low-end TQ that D lays to the ground.Very helpful merging, passing another car, and taking off, all while achieving 29.X MPG driving spiritedly.
I did have my fun with the carbon buildup at the 50k mark few years ago, and the SES light for various issues, however, all is solid now. The car never left me stranded, even though it had the SES light on for numerous issues. I've taken measures to fight carbon buildup as best as I can. Regardless, BMW now have carbon cleaning tools for this car that does not cost $10k anymore! |

Think we're all 'preaching to the choir' here. Count me in as well. Best overall car we've ever owned. The D just seems to do everything so effortlessly. I would drive it more but my wife keeps taking it.
For us we've had a pretty good ride so far. About to hit 80K miles and the list of warranty items is pretty short given the mileage.
Regular suspension and I never liked the way the shocks were valved, rebound damping was way too soft (probably to compensate for the runflats). I also think this made it much worse when hitting potholes as the spring would drive the wheel into the hole. This was recently remedied by installing Bilstein B6 monotube shocks. I offset the stiffer shocks by installing Bridgestone Driveguard runflats which are much softer the the OEM tires, almost (but not quite) like a non-runflat tire. While a overall tad stiffer than I would like, the setup is near perfect for me. Very well controlled and the ride is more than acceptable. No more fleetwood like ride over large bumps. The driveguards are all season touring class tires, not performance. A "W" speed rating and they have more than adequate grip for anything I'm going to do on the street. |

[IMG][/IMG]My 09 has 91K on it now and has only been back to the dealer three times: updated egr valve, replaced turbo oil line, and updated def system, all covered by warranty. I dont use the car for short trips or general running around, and use it for road trips or freeway trips of at least 100 miles. Two weeks ago we drove from Parker CO to Thousand Oaks CA, a distance of 1200 miles in 13 1/2 hours. We made just two fuel stops...first mpg was 35.6, second was 31.4. There is not another vehicle at any price that I know of that can maintain that kind of speed and MPG. Needless to say my 335d is by far the best road trip car for two people Ive ever seen.

Am on a combo road trip and family visit. Have 56k miles now. Started this trip with about 140 miles on the tank. Drove from Portland to Ashland, refilled and got 37.6 mpg. Drove to Fremont CA and refilled with Propel HPR. Got 38.4 mpg on that tank. Next to Sacramento for a few days then off to Provo UT for a few days. Then back to Portland. We'll see how the mileage for those segments goes. Can't seem to achieve 40 mpg anymore. But it still drives wonderfully except for an annoying rattle in the rear. Have JBD back on at 100%. What a great road car.

I think you mean the Tesla 3, The S is a large car. And actually that is one possible direction for me. Currently at 80K miles on the D, and as long as the emission stuff does not get me, I expect the D to last long enough until the Tesla 3 is available. That is unless BMW gets their act together and makes a decent all electric car that is not ugly like the i3 (yes I know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder).

No, I meant the S. Because of its size, it carries enough batteries to get about 300 miles on a charge. This is my distance threshold. Plus, it'll outperform my d. I don't think the 3 will. And you're right...BMW's electrics are just ugly. Tesla did it right, making their electric cars look just like any other sexy car would aspire to look.
