On Track: 2016 Laguna Seca Blue M3

Attended another track day at Portland International Raceway earlier this week and wanted to share thoughts/photos with the community.

This isn’t the first track day I’ve attended with this F80. It just happens to be the only one that I’ve got photographs of. The F8X is an amazing platform that is track capable lap after lap. If you haven’t already, I’d recommend attending at least one driving school or track day to really get a feel for your vehicle’s capabilities. It will not only give you a better understanding of vehicle dynamics, but will teach you how to be a safer/better/more confident driver.

The day began damp, but dried up quickly. Morning sessions were dry. Great for warm up. Showers came on later in the afternoon then dried up quickly followed by a small shower just in time for the last session of the day. The track conditions varied throughout the day, but that provided great opportunity to practice the race-line vs. the rain-line and really learn the handling characteristics of the F8X platform in wet weather conditions. At one point the 1.967 mile racetrack was dry and sunny at one half and wet and rainy on the other. Gives you an idea of the track conditions that day.

Main objectives of this session were to condition muscle memory and practice technique. For that reason speed/throttle was regulated to 90mph for first session and warm up laps and 120mph max on straightaways so that focus can be given to hitting shift-points, brake zones and apexes in a consistent manner. Once that was dialed in speed was increased and eventually a new personally best lap time was set.

For those interested, all laps were recorded with the BMW lap timer and the M settings below. Current best was achieved multiple times with a +/- .01 variable. I've also include a track map to give you a better idea of the course layout.

M Mode Settings:
Throttle = Sport
Suspension = Sport+
Steering = Sport+

Temp: 54-57* Fahrenheit

Lap Times:

Current Best: June 14 - 1:42:92 (Max Speed 122mph)
Previous Best: April 15 - 1:43:98 (Max Speed 126mph)

Can’t wait to get the ZCP out on the track and see how it performs against the non-ZCP version. Both builds are identical except for the Competition Package. Hope to have a cohesive write up once I’ve had a chance to do the 1200 mile service. Until then feel free to ask any questions.

Great shots!

Can't wait to get your thoughts on tracking the ZCP vs non-ZCP.

I've made a few BMW CCA HPDE days but missed that one. Will you be going to the August date? What group do you run it?

Wow that car is simply stunning!!

It doesn't even need fancy carbon splitters etc it just looks superb, silver wheels, CCB's and the MP mirrors! You nailed it!

The event I attending last week was more of a competition licensing school than an HPDE. I was fortunate enough to have the owner of the school as my instructor.

I haven't done any BMW CCA HPDE's yet. I almost dropped in on the last one, but had already done a post-track day clay bar, detail & shine and didn't want to get the ride all dirty again.

Not sure if I'll be driving at the August HPDE. I'll have the ZCP by then and need to break it in before getting it on track. Are you going to run at the Aug event?

Thank you! The mirrors are actually gloss black. I purchased a set and had them painted to match the rest of the F80's gloss black trim.

Hoping to do Hooked on driving in July and BMW track day in August. There are typically 3-4 F80's there. Hope to see you there. Beautiful car

car look fantastic on the track, love lsb without even trying. My personal preference is an oem carbon fiber diffuser versus body color.

Great right up. Just love the LSB - will have to get that the next time. Very much looking forward to your ZCP comparo. I like the way you are controlling your variables.

Curious how far a stock F8x can be pushed at Portland International Raceway. There are only a few of them I see at PIR.
