FYI for Canada, no iDrive 5.0 in the MY17 cars built in July, they will start with the ones in August.

Reason given to a fellow forum member was shortage in supply.

If this is for the M2, it directly contradicts what my GM was told just a few days ago (that it will not be there anytime soon for the M2, but it will be for almost everything else). So... business as usual for BMW

Good thing I don't really care either way... it's more of an entertainment than a serious interest - like watching Trump try to act like a politician.

Could someone enlighten me about idrive 5.0? Is it software/hardware, or both?

I also asked about Apple CarPlay and he said July will not have it but August will (As mentioned all over the board).
When i ask about retro fitting Carplay he said No.
Sucks cause I'm Week 30, so i'm just one week +1 day shy of August.

Is there a chance my car could be delayed and pushed into August? If so will i have the option to opt for Apple CarPlay?

I believe when you placed your order, if the dealer was able to select 6CP CarPlay, then that means you can get it. If not, then it's not available for your build.

Yup, he said no option for that with my build :/
Will i be able to opt for it if my production gets moved down to August?

Recap:
BMW Genius said No retro fitting down the line planned.
SA Manager said "They usually do retro fit these types of software upgrades"

However, my SA said he didn't want to give me false hopes, and asked if i wanted the allocation now or wait for later... I opted for NOW

I mean if it was a touch screen then i would wait for the next allocation, but i still have to mess with the phone... I guess not such a big deal.

I don't understand why BMW can't have a touch screen?

The iDrive controller surface acts as a touchpad.

I have never seen BMW able to retrofit stuff like this. There is always one extra wire required or a new harness. It would be very very cool, but man, not sure how an SA would be able to answer this. So I'd challenge him and ask him "can you give me examples of when you have seen BMW retrofit a software upgrade?"

I'd be curious

They actually do have touchscreens now, just only for the 5er and up.

I've played with the system in the 7er and it was great. Having said that, even without the touchscreen, the iDrive 5.0 is a nice upgrade IMO. Everything was just very crisp. One of the small reasons I waited to get an MY17 F80 instead of 16.

You can see the iDrive 5.0 w/touchpad and gestures (only available in certain models) in this video.

Both....amazed how people could think anything other than big changes? Did BMW just throw an obsolete touch screen into every car prior car just fir a laugh

These guys ain't even pay for M mirrors on my M....and they're giving out touch screens for non touch use prior to MY17....nope.

Sorry that reads a bit rantish, I'm tired but seriously no cheap path here, hardware and software unfortunately. These updates come thick and fast from Bavaria for sure.

For the M2 it would be:

- New high-res screen

- New button layout on the controller

- New 5.0 software

iDrive 5.0 is both hardware and software. I know some iDrive 5.0 functions can be hacked to work on the older NBT EVO, but may not ever be useful.

I a bit sad that we can't put this in the MY16 and if we did, it would probably cost an Arm and leg
