Recommendations for WINTER TIRES

I know that nobody wants to think of this right now, but I am looking to grab a new set of winters as mine are done and I don't want to be looking last minute when it gets cold. Any suggestions? I have gotten stuck, even with winters...so I want to get really good quality winter tires. Thanks!

Those are the best I agree. The fins know snow.

That being said I got blizzaks from tirerack for like $60 bucks each on a sale.

Hakka's are the only tire to get IMHO, take it from a fellow Cannuck.

Past couple winters had the Hakka R2's, will be going with the slightly more aggressive Hakka 8's.

Although, just looked on their site, there are MANY new tires now, WRA4, WRD4, WRD3......have no clue about these new ones.

https://www.nokiantyres.com/tyres/pa.../winter-tyres/

Although, usually the WR series are a year round all season more than a winter. Maybe they are for people that get "winter", and not winter.

The R2 are surprisingly good, a lot quieter than my intermediate Mich A/S3's.

Handling on them is quite soft. This is a true, real winter tire, not a performance winter tire.

you are going to pay alot more for them fwiw. They also have snow tires and then they have high performance snow tires. I always bought the inexpensive snow tires because they wear out faster than all seasons and I have no need to be able to 'push it' when the ground is frozen(even if there is no snow) for 3-4 months of the year.

tire rack has a number of video reviews of snow tires you can check out: http://www.tirerack.com/content/tire...160811200345:s

It's a BMW, should be pushing it year round.

The R2 are the exact same price as General Altimax or pretty much any decent winter tire. Winter is the most important season to have the absolute best tires you can get. The Nokians also typically last a lot longer than most other winter tires, so they are actually cheaper in the long run.

Did a quick search on these and it doesn't seem that they are readily available in Canada.

Where did you get yours?

Right now I have some cheapo Sailun Ice Blazer that I got a really good deal on. Tire is about 4 seasons old. Zero problems in snow, but the goddamn noise is driving me insane. Still got thread on them but I have to change. Can't deal with the noise and vibrations that come with them.

Fwiw winter tires at about half thread are basically all seasons. The soft compound wears quickly and that is what really helps grip in the snow and ice. Also as it wears down it is much more likely to hydroplane.

I work at a dealership, and our tire supplier carries them, Lavoie Tire in Quebec. I believe Kal Tire is also a distributor for Nokian in Ontario. Lavoie Tire will not sell them to you if you are in Ontario, I have to drive to their warehouse in Gatineau and pick them up.

Winter tires are considered 100% worn at 4mm of tread. But the more tread you have the better. I usually replace mine at 6mm.

This is only true for some of the Bridgestone Blizzak tires as the soft compound is only on the top part (60%) of the tires. Not the case for Michelin and Nokian.

Read this Car and Driver winter tire review. I am running Michelin Ice-X with good results.

I'm considering going studded this year. After 10 years in alberta, i can tell there is going to be a lot of snow this winter. Just scored some 17" oem wheels also. X drive and some pizza cutter 225/45/17 ftw

I am likely going to go with the Nokian Hakkapeliittas. I have two different product codes and prices, but am not sure what the real difference is.

T429640 for approximately $150 and T428663 $200 for 205/55/16

I believe the 663 is a run flat version of the 640
