Optilube XPD usage
I just switched from Power Service Diesel Kleen (PS DK) to Optilube XPD. I'm on my second tank and am wondering what others are using for mix ratio. I'm attaching the mix ratio instructions to guide our discussion.
I used 1/2 oz per gallon per the sentences above the table for maximum cetane boost. This equates to the cold weather recommendation. Car is ever so slightly running different than when using the PS DK. My practice with the PS DK was 4 oz/10 gallon(equates to .4 oz/gallon). Their label also had the "double it for max cetane boost". So, I was using 0.8 oz/gallon. So, 2 things are going on here. I'm using .5 oz per gallon instead of .8 oz per gallon. I've also read that PS DK has a little more cetane boost than Optilube. I did notice on second tank that fuel economy was a little better than 1st tank. I'm dismissing that to possibly be just the tank of fuel itself as I got 2nd tank on way home from central Texas. I will watch for next few tanks to see if slight increase in fuel mileage stays. Fellow Optilube users, any comments please? Thanks |

I use anywhere from 2-4 oz for 16 gallons of diesel.

I've been using 1/4oz per gallon since April. If I miss a tank I seem get 1-2 mpg less. You can purchase it through a VW TDI Group Buy and save a significant amount, plus fixed shipping. Just Google "VW TDI Optilube Group Buy," and this is direct from Optilube.

As BB_Cuda stated, the biggest benefit is adding back some of the Lubricity lost with ULSD. It also increases cetane, helps to clean the injectors, and stabilizes diesel fuel. It is highly regarded as one of the best diesel additives available for today's ULSD. I use the XPD formula, but they have others.

My point of inquiry was whether I'm over doing it by using 1/2 oz per gallon (1:256 ratio) vs 1/4 oz per gallon (1:512 ratio).
Car seems to have adjusted to different additive and is back to same behavior. It was only at idle that I noticed an ever so subtle difference. I have used additive in every tank and even on long trips I carry the jug with me. |

Please show data. Here's a study that shows there is no significant difference - despite all the testimonials you can read on the internet. http://www.fuelexpert.co.za/2-stroke...ical-study.php More than that it does not have the other benefits, such as cetane improvement. Worse, there is evidence it can create injector fouling in a modern CR diesel (see same study). Finally, some manufacturers of 2 stroke oils specifically recommend it not be used in diesel fuel. I'll stop there. |

I like to run straight diesel at times, one or two tanks additive then one diesel. The "boost" they sell is just cetane but with a little lubricant as well (Mineral oil). That product seems to last an eternity you barely use any and it's only for summer use. The only complaint I have about these products is the nuclear smell . Besides that I've been running it for 35k with no issues. *Also. Optilube sells small 4oz bottles that you can pre fill which makes it much better for traveling. They are only like $2 a piece too. |

kydiesel35, I got a couple small containers and a pump. I also got an odor free container to put the small ones in for the road.
For DWR: the optilube site has a link to a test where 20 different additives were run. I'm having IT issues trying to paste that link here (using phone). Biodiesel had the largest reduction in wear rate and Optilube was 2nd place . Powers Service Diesel Kleen was 10th place. Perhaps I can go get on PC to paste in link. I will go back to 4 oz per full tank on next fill up. On the stink front, optilube is no worse than the PSDK. Last edited by BB_cuda; 10-08-2016 at 02:53 PM.. |

Spicer report link

base line was diesel with no additives with HFFR (wear scar measure method) of 636. Normal pump ULSD is better than this due to additives HFFR=High Frequency Reciprocating Rig #1)biodiesel at 2% was best (soy based) at 221 #2)optilube XPD was 317 HFFR at 256:1 ratio (fuel:additive) #7) 2 cycle oil was 471 HFFR at 2% mix #10) Power Service diesel kleen was 575 HFFR (400:1 ratio) EDIT: replace **** with place dot com |

The recommendation for doubling the dosage in winter is due to the change from Summer Blend diesel to Winter blend. Winter blend is known to have less energy (approx 3%), and often contains kerosene or naphtha. Both of these are known to cause lower lubricity than summer diesel.

BB, are you continuing to see better MPG from XPD vs PS? I have been toying with switching to XPD as well. I have run PS in my Jetta and now the D with no issues. Also toying with just going straight diesel, since the HPFP in our cars seem to be more reliable vs the VW CRs.
I really wanted to start with XPD on the Jetta, but got put off that they are just not a large volume manufacturer and had even reformulated XPD since the spicer report was done many years ago. That coupled with some contamination issues just kept me going with PS. Looks like the contamination issue was isolated/corrected, so have been thinking about the switch. Below is a long thread in TDIclub...last few pages discuss the issues I'm referring to. http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread...366933&page=26 |
