335d engine coolant temperature
Heya,
I have a 2009 335d with Jarek 2.5 tune DPF/SCR removed and Andrew's EGR delete. Now that its getting cold up here in Canada(-1°C this morning), I noticed my instant MPGs weren't quite where they used to be. I opened torque and started monitoring the engine coolant temps, it seems that they hover around 72°C, getting up to around 78°C with some spirited acceleration but always coming down to around 70-72°C again. I'm under the impression that our T-stat should operate at 90°C and this is where the coolant temp should be at during steady state driving, so my T-stat could be bad. I was just wondering if this would be the case, or if anyone else with the EGR delete has noticed their coolant temps being lower than normal? Thanks |

I recall losing a couple quarts. Just go buy the jug of coolant and mix 50/50. It might be time for you to do a coolant change anyway. I have it from a reliable source (Mike Miller) that it's every 2 yrs

I also have Jarek tune (2.0). My temps never go over 81 degrees, just hover around 74-78.
Fuel economy also down Does anyone have a DiY writeup for thermostat change? Any recomendations on which one to get?? Thanks |

And you completed the cooling circuit with a line where the cooler would be like in this picture?
Photo courtesy of www.fixmyvw.com http://cdn1.bigcommerce.com/server41...g?t=1462413336 I was wondering if this maybe provides a bypass for the coolant and that is why the temperatures are low? Last edited by Owen81; 10-10-2016 at 03:55 PM.. |

Yes, my coolant line is just like that.
The egr delete & coolant bypass were done about 2 months ago The Jarek abc delete tune is about 2 years old. That is when i actually started to monitor things with the obd2 dongle My temps have always been in the range of 72-80ish Rate of temp rise did not appear to change after egr coolant line was bypassed. Good thought though! I vaguely recall forum members writing up a diy for thermostat change.. also about installing a "higher temp" one... |

Ah I see.
Looks like ours is very close to this DIY, and it should be much easier with the cooler out of the way! http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1008568 |

Watching thread closely. Please let me know where you order t-stat from and if it solves the issue. With outside temp this am at 37F, coolant temp hovered at 76-78C.

This is where I bought replacement T/S from. The above link already has the T/S loaded up for you. They used to be called Husker but it is still same dealer in Lincoln, Nebraska. Just a little over $50. I have found it a good practice to throw in a couple oil filters, perhaps a fuel filter and other regularly serviced items to make the most of the shipping cost. I have a order in right now but one of the items has to come from Germany so it will take an extra week or so. |

Just ordered the TS from ECSTunning. $50 ish & free shipping.
I will post update after install. Today ambient temp in 40's and with coolant reaching MAX 74 deg after a 20mile drive. Mix driving. Really hoping the temps improve. |

Also: EGR cooler deletes always cost about 10% fuel economy hit in northern climates. Longer warm up times are also hell on engine wear. |

My 335d showed improved mpg's (tracked every single fillup since new) and less wear on UOA's since doing the EGR delete, even though it takes much longer to warm up. And it rarely gets above 174F, unless very hot weather and running A/C, or doing multiple 1/4 mile passes in succession. Some of the UOA's can be seen here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1045534 I keep thinking about swapping the T-stat, but haven't measured a reason to fuss with it yet.
