Dinan Development Car Needed - 335d

Dinan is in need of an E chassis x35d vehicle for final development on our diesel tuning units. If you are local to Morgan Hill, CA (SF Bay Area) and wish to partake in the program feel free to PM me and we can get this project all squared away and released to the general public.

Really? Aren't these cars a bit too old for Dinan to develop parts for? I thought you guys only wanted late model vehicles for R&D.

Normally yes but the unit fits both old and new so might as well make it compatible for as many cars as possible to expand the reach.

Over 15 years ago a mistake was made that affected roughly 15 cars in which we rectified by buying the affected cars back, applying a BMW approved patch in which was warrantied for 10yr/100k miles or offered a complete shell exchange in which the car would essentially be rebuilt from the ground up. All options were fully paid for by Dinan and also each car gifted a bunch of Dinan parts in addition to transportation fees, etc.

We made a mistake but stood behind the product and honored our warranty. I don't know of any other aftermarket company that would go to the lengths we did in that one unfortunate case to make all those affected whole again.

We don't do headers anymore though either so the situation would never happen again, so there is that. =)

Not a big secret... doing DINANTRONICS Sport for the diesels. A simple little boost controller basically with bluetooth capability, quick install, etc. On the 4 cylinder its a quick 30HP/50TRQ and on the 6 cylinder it should be around 60-70+ HP/TRQ (E9x x35d needed to confirm that rough number applies to the older generation as well). For all we know the older generation may be making like 120 HP, hence the desire to test to find out.

What Ameya and that video are referring to is the DINANTRONICS Elite and not the SPORT unit that would be for the diesels.

For a comparison of the 2 systems you can visit http://www.dinancars.com/the-evolution-of-power/.

Hmmmm. I'd thought you were creating an Elite version for it. Boost alone doesn't make power, in fact it COSTS power. Increasing boost and nothing else just makes a modern, HSDI turbodiesel engine run leaner, meaning more NOx and more Adblue consumption w/no power gains. So how do you make more power with the 'Sport' version which only modifies boost by use of spoofed signals?

Why wouldn't Dinan tune the DDE? I didn't think Steve Dinan was a fan of piggy back controllers...

In think link and video, Steve Dinan literally says tuning the ECU for boost and fuel is the right way to do things and that piggy back are infeior. I find it hard to believe Dinan feels a piggyback is OK on a diesel and not a petrol car...

I think another tuner has already mastered the Diesel tuning segment - IMO.

Why now, and why diesel for Dinan?

Because the F series DME is encrypted to the point we have been unable to get past it without physical manipulation. With our warranty in place that makes that approach a non-starter.

While we would prefer a flash solution and still maintain it is superior the reality is a true obd flash going forward is a thing of the past. Having complete access by default is always going to be better but if that is not an option you take what you can get. There is an entire market based on the piggyback... a growing market that can't simply be ignored. It's obvious it's acceptable to the masses so instead of resting on our laurels our intention is to make a better mouse trap so to speak.

At the outset we plan on just doing the real basic SPORT tuner to gauge interest, etc. eventually the plan would be to offer the ELITE units withe full harness/warranty should it prove out to be the market is there and the r&d time is justified.

My friend has a 2015 M3 Dinan badge which he purchased that way. First thing we did was remove it and and replace with JB4. Both are piggybacks. JB4 made a noticeable difference but Dinan's goal is safety so that's probably a given outcome.

So odd this message. I recall contacting DINANA before i bought my 2011 335d and their response was that they did not have any plans for DIESEL mods, now 5 yrs later they want part of it
