On the fence - 2011 335d msport 62k miles $17k
Hi Folks,
Yup, another possible vw transplant... I've been reading through quite a lot of posts on e90 about the 335d, its many problems, its amazing torque, but I just can't pull the trigger. Here are the details on the car: 2011 335d, 62k miles. Sports package, Cold Weather, Premium, M-sport suspension 2 owners. Dealer maintained until August 2016. CBU cleaned at dealer at 45k. New rear tires (run flats) Overall excellent condition. Test drive was incredible. My questions: 1. With no warranty, what should I expect to pay in maintenance per year (I am fairly handy and have a good set of tools and experience)? 2. How many mile can I expect on tires? I am not planning on doing too many burnouts (can't promise none). 3. How well does a car seat fit in the back? 4. Is $17k a good deal? Honest opinion, get the car or no? |

If you are handy and informed, go for it. Not much else on the market can compare. I have a car seat in mine, it's a bit tight when rear facing, but works fine when normal. If you are worried about space, find an x5 35d.
If you weren't handy, or this were your first exposure to German cars, i'd say stay away. It's a great fit for VW TDI drivers that like driving and fuel economy.... but driving a bit more. Cheers |

A set of 4 - f/r - OEM Michelin Pilot Sport ZP tires costs around $1500. Check on tirerack for costs. The Bridgestones are a bit less. You can go cheaper if you use go-flats, or downgrade to Bridgestone Driveguards. A backwards-facing 1-3 year old carseat fits fine, but you can't get the front seat all the way back. If you live in OR or WA, they're CA emissions states and the car would have 8K miles and 1-2 years left on the 7/70K. Last edited by floydarogers; 11-15-2016 at 01:38 AM.. I was able to find new Dunlop run flats for around $700 plus install on tire rack close out. I've gotten around 35k per set of tires
I just installed a car seat in mine on the middle hump (backwards facing). Both front seats able to go back and you can still squeeze someone in back seat no problem. Get it. You won't regret it. Especially if you hit a pot hole and some emissions equipment falls off |

I did a LOT of research before settling on my new to me 2011 M-sport D, and I agree, there is nothing like it on the market. Luxury, handling, ride, power, economy... and hopefully reliability after a few more potholes.

Thanks for replies folks.
Couple of follow up questions: 1. It seems we have a pretty good community of independent mechanics (not necessarily Indy shops), so I should be able to save some money from going to the dealership. What's a good annual budget to set aside for this? 2. How much of the work on this car is feasible for me or a relatively handy person to do? 60%? 80%? 3. Some mentioned a third party warranty, is it worth it and if so, with which company? |

What is your intent? To keep it stock? If so I'd recommend a 3rd party warranty. DEF tanks, NOx sensors, DPF, etc are all very pricey bits which are fragile on this car.
However if your intent is to do a full emissions delete, I'd recommend skipping on the 3rd party warranty and spending that coin on the delete when systems begin to fail. A full emissions delete will run about ~$1800 give or take assuming you do the wrenching. That includes the replacement downpipe, tune, EGR blanking plates, and some cushion for misc 'while in there' stuff. After that, I'd plan on about $800 annually for general repair / maintenance issues. Such as fuel filter, trans fluid, shocks / struts / thermostat / etc. |

Mods to consider: buy a compact spare tire, X5 scissor jack, and 17 deep well socket with breaker bar M3 cowl changeover catch can kit swirl flap delete afore mentioned deletes with proper tune go flat tires (hopefully the car already has non runflats) aftermarket exhaust (if deletes in play) maintenance list to add onto Mark M's: potential harmonic balance red boost hose seals (both ends), charge pipe seals (both ends) some guys go through fits with Nox sensors, urea tank, cracked EGR coolers. Seems to be hit or miss |

Yeah that sounds like a Deal! but slightly confused when you say sport package with msport suspension. i thought it was the same suspension as sport but more so exterior styling and the steering wheel and other stuff with ///M badges? also if you are concerned about tire wear just slap on some 17"s to drive your cost of tires way down.
i got mine for $24k (M-Sport) @ 38k on the clock back in June. already up to 50k (i drove it 2000 miles back home). anywho I have the BMW Gold warranty (Assurant Solutions) which covers everything besides electronics. Coverage is good till 9/30/2018 or 70,000 miles this was included in the 24k pricetag and fully loaded (iDrive, cold weather, etc). (also includes CBU cleaning if needed) Also I got it from the PNW so I snagged a local one away from you! I would say change your trans, diff fluid asap as preventative maintenance. other than that no issues. no emissions in Illinois for Diesel so after warranty is up, i will roll coal on prius-es and in turn make my car run cleaner and happier. |

Hi Folks,
Thanks for pulling me off the fence and into a 335d. Looks like I am going to pick it up tomorrow! Here is the service history since the owner got it CPO in 2014. What do you all think? Date of Service Mileage Type of Service 11/8/16 62668 Passenger side bulb 8/8/16 60811 Replaced rear brakes 8/8/16 60811 Top off fluids 7/22/16 60537 Oil change 7/22/16 60537 Def fluid 7/22/16 60537 Intake silencer service (Air Filter) 7/22/16 60537 Fuel Filter Service 7/22/16 60537 Replace far right vent adjuster 1/4/16 57000 Replace both left brake light bulbs 1/4/16 57000 Replace wiper inserts 1/4/16 57000 Replace microfilters 1/4/16 57000 Premium brake fluid service. Flush. 3/30/15 51688 Oil change 3/30/15 51688 Def fluid 4/14/14 46849 Windshield chip repair 4/14/14 46849 Replaced injector #3 2/28/14 45907 CBU Cleaned 2/28/14 45907 Replaced rear wheels. 2/28/14 45907 Premium brake fluid service. Flush. 8/30/2013 42415 All 6 injectors replaced The only thing I am wondering about is this note in the most recent service (11/8/16): Found rear brakes at 8mm. Would need to perform CBS correction to have the car properly reflect the mileage for when brake are do. What does that mean? The computer needs to be reset or adjusted to the mileage? Big deal? |

Computers don't know when the brakes are needed. Rear brakes are used a lot in this car for traction control. Turn it off if you want to play and they will last longer. I wouldn't care about that.

Any thoughts on the service history?
Anyone have a recommendation for a 3p warranty? I think I want to keep it stock for the most part. I am more of a eco guy who likes to get and go occasionally... |

Endurance.
It was their top tier plan - $3,200 was the all in price IIRC. They will disclose a list of exclusions for you to read, mostly common wear items (Brake Rotors, Pads, hoses, etc). With a any company - read the exclusion list carefully so you know what is not covered. If you buy the warranty, and you are thinking of any mods - I'd highly recommend that you find a local and reputable Indy shop who can work with you on the diagnosis and repair estimates. |
