Real world MPG

Hi Folks,

I've got a 7.7 mile commute with a mix of neighborhood traffic, highway, and city traffic.

I am curious what kind of MPG you all see in these different scenarios?

City traffic:
Highway (commute hours):
Neighborhood (30-40mph):
Overall commute mixed mpg:
Road trip mpg:

This car is amazing btw.

Guessing with a short commute like that I would expect maybe avg 20-25mpg, stock. Maybe more if you are soft on skinny pedal

I've gotten 41-42 mpg in some situations on the road. For my normal driving I mostly average 31-32 mpg. Last week I fueled in Cle Elum (around 2000' elevation), went west to Bellevue (85 miles) at 70-75 mph (that's a 1000' climb to the pass and 3000' down to B-vue) and got 42 mpg. I've gotten 38 mpg coming back to Seattle from Portland - pretty flat.

20-25 sounds about right for a shorter low-speed commute.

Things that radically affect mileage:
1) Never getting above 48 mph - which is when it finally shifts into 6th. You will never get much above 25 if below that.
2) Hills. Snoqualmie Pass and others kill mileage. You can recover that "lost" mileage by going all the way back down.
3) Speeds > 55-60.
4) Headwinds

In 3+ years of driving mine, mix of highway and back road, I consistently averaged right at 30mpg. +/- a few.

My car sees a mix of highway and city. On a cruise it seems to get like 34, but in town its pretty poor, like 25. Overall I average 29. I've found that re adapting the transmission by letting rpms fall in gear helps. Oddly it gets much better mileage when I drive on curvy backroads than any other time

5) running both front seat butt warmers I have seen knock down mileage by about 2 mpg. Torque on alternator is a load and little things matter when your getting 42 mpg on the interstate.
6) using Bike rack and 2 bikes loaded at 70 mph reduces mileage to 35 from 40 mpg. The is platform style rack that mounts a little lower on receiver hitch. I can only imagine how bad the effect would be with roof mounted bikes. My guess is this wouldn't impact an X5D as much as it's wider and taller. The bikes do poke out a couple inches port and stbd.

City mileage isn't anything to write home about. On a highway trip I took a few weeks ago I got 42MPG US. If I didn't take the back roads on the way home, should have easily seen 45. On my commute each week I'm happy if I see 550miles per tank.

As folks quote personal mileage experience, it would be important to point out to the OP if your vehicle has forgotten how to spell after hitting potholes. For some odd reason a recurring symptom of increased MPG and available HP/TQ seems to occur after such incidents.

I'm just going to make a comment about diesel owners and fuel economy. We tend to exaggerate our results because it's a point of pride for diesel owners. Especially when I see people making claims about towing fuel economy.

City traffic: 23-27 lower in summer when ac is on, higher in winter
Highway (commute hours): I don't commute, but during rush hour I see about 23-25
Neighborhood (30-40mph): 23
Overall commute mixed mpg: 27.2
Road trip mpg: 28-32 (typically cruise at 80-100). Have seen 32.5 at 90mph in New Mexico over 1 tank.

Have I ever seen 42 sure, when you reset your computer and are at freeway speeds in a flat area. But I've never averaged better than 32.5 over a whole tank. Generally around 25-27 in mixed driving per tank. But so much of your fuel economy depends on traffic and your driving techniques it's hard to draw comparisons. Plus it's really variable about how people calculate Hesse numbers.

On a 335D? Are you sure that is not your "gas" mileage?

This is pretty much what i see as well. Highest ever Interstate run was around 42 mpg which occurred under ideal conditions (flat, no a/c, cruise @70 mph) My fuelly can be seen below has about 70k miles worth of data. Never missed a fill up.

I got 42 on a tank from St Louis to DC, with nothing "missing" from the engine. But that is about as high as it gets for me.

What's the Record 335D High MPG ever Recorded?

Mine gets close to 43 on the highway, under ideal conditions. That was after 200 miles, no wind, mostly flat, 78mph, 70F, ~5,000ft.el. It goes even higher, if the speed is held lower.

For Castle. I've hit several pot holes. It will hold 41 mpg all the way from Spring Cypress to clear lake going 70. 1/2 of pot hole has been refilled with DOC back online.

So many variables, 40's are more than possible though. I noticed after hybrids the mpg went up 10-15%. I managed to get 41.2 over 150 miles going at least 80+++; it's all about riding the spool and depressing the pedal over the 50mpg mark on the tacho.

I'm really happy with my car, I don't want anymore power. 390-420whp (600+tq), I swear it's the perfect power range for this platform, pure rip and efficiency! Everything is holding up well, still kinda impressed by this thing years later...

My best mpg was 36 in my 2011 m-sport. Average was 27 mpg. But I never get great mpg because of my driving style.
My 12 X5d average is 19mpg and best was 26 mpg.
