Yay, first issue! Rear defroster not working

Hi folks,

Here we go, I've got the official welcome.

This morning my rear defroster did not fulfill its duty or name.

After a few quick searches, I discovered that this could be due to either an blown fuse, a dying or low charged battery, or something worse.

I did notice the other day when I was sitting in the car (engine off) and was playing with the different systems that I got a low battery alarm.

Could this be the issue? Do I just need to charge the battery or is it a sign for a replacement?

What diagnostic tools do you use? Apps? Links?

Thanks!

I'm assuming your battery has never been replaced. now that the battery is 5+ years old. Probably due for a new battery. With low battery voltage faults stored and present on cluster, the vehicle will shut down consumer loads such as rear def, sometimes full blower speed, audio system can cut out until battery voltage is restored. check/replace your battery first before assuming it dosent work. I have a copy of Rheingold and ICOM that I use, same system I used when I worked at the dealer.

Could I register the battery with this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...A1GLTOK8L9INK7

And the Carly app?

Also, where do folks usually get their batteries? Do you need to get it through the dealer?

I cant comment on the carly app. You can get any battery really as long as its the same size and CCA rating. You could switch to an AGM battery but would require programming not registering.

Sticking to same battery chemistry is more straight forward. Still requires a register.

I just got Carly going today myself. My battery was replaced after 3 yrs and is almost 3 yrs old again. I periodically use battery tender and try to avoid short trips.

Carly has in app add ons and I think battery register and commanded DPF regen are a couple.

I think you might need to buy the authentic Carly OBDII adapter to use the advanced service options. I'm not positive on the battery registration though.

Battery Registry

Can someone explain the battery registry to me? Just not fully understanding why I can't go buy a correct battery and not install it without registering it or am I completely off by this. Thanks

You can register and change to AGM battery with Carly. You do need their OBD2 Bluetooth dongle for android or their OBD2 WIFI dongle for Apple to do all the extra features.

The DDE will optimize charging the battery based on age and AH of the battery when registering it. You should also get longer battery life when registered vs putting a new one without registering. I think BMW made it like this for more profit for dealer service because the could have made the car smart enough to know when a new battery is installed.

Vehicles are fair more compelex than 10 years ago. They also make changes in the closed circuit draw monitoring system
