4 cities to ban diesel vehicles

4 cities to ban diesel vehicles
"The mayors of Paris, Mexico City, Madrid and Athens say they are implementing the ban to improve air quality."

http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-38170794

Europe really screwed itself 20 years ago when it promoted diesel to reduce CO2. And it was only 2 years ago - 2014 - when they implemented rules for reduction of NOx. I guess they're not as smart as they think they are.

Mexico City is just a bad place to put an urban area.

I wonder if they're going to ban trucks and starve themselves? Probably not.

Brazil prohibits the sale of diesel passenger vehicles in the whole country. They do allow diesel pick-ups for 'farm use' - a loophole many use to buy diesel pick-up trucks. Large trucks and buses still bellow plenty of diesel exhaust.

Interesting how policy decisions change over time and the effect those changes have on the industries and markets. Surely there is more to come.

The greater fear I have in this sudden 'anti-diesel' sentiment, is that policy makers will enact much stiffer taxes on the fuel. Then grant after-the-fact rebates to those using it for agriculture, construction, or industry. Thus effectively killing off passenger diesel propulsion.

Realistically, this is the easiest option for government to enact which will kill our resale value over night.

Short of the VW spike, our values are likely going to drop. Demand for passenger Diesels is only decreasing with all the press. The only hope for valuations is if supply drops (aka VW not making them) I love this car, but if I wanted new, not sure there is a Diesel car on the market I would go after. A few trucks? Def, but I want power and fuel economy, and I need more than the 1.4-2.0's are pumping out!

The resale value on these cars is impacted more by their high cost of repairs and maintenance. Why buy a used 335d when your yearly cost of repairs and maintenance are nearly as high the depreciation costs on a new leased and trouble free 328i. That's what killed the resale value of D's and most BMWs. Ever wonder why a 6 year old 750 is 17K (over 100 new)? because it easily takes 10K-20K a year to keep it on the road. You'll spend more than the cars value in just a year or so.. A similar thing is happening on the non-modded D's. https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/d...7161/overview/

BMWs resale is mostly affected by its low durability.

On to cities banning diesels, One thing I will say, my experience indicates there is no cost savings of owning a modern diesel over a gasoline equivalent. The extremely low reliability of the emissions components on modern diesels eats any fuel cost savings. Maybe those cities are on to something. Modern diesels just aren't able to meet current emissions reliably. Especially with a large number of owners who remove their emissions components to try and make it reliable. The others are running with frequent check engine lights and large repair bills (not meeting emissions when the SES is on)... So modern diesels frequently aren't running clean in the real world, either by voluntary removal of emissions controls, or their failure.

BTW I won't comment on gasoline BMW V8's running clean either with their chronic valve stem seal failures, CCV failures, etc. YES you can roll coal with a n62/n63 BMW V8

Not sure I follow that logic??? Wouldn't that only further solidify the public's perception of how diesel is wrong and a gross polluter? Sounds like a foolish move to me that will only nail the coffin shut faster.

Bro, I can't wait to get my new stages so I can roll coal even harder! Jajaja

When my mom is mad at me, it makes me want to roll coal even harder!

But if you ban diesel, that's just gonna make these people roll coal even harder!

Not getting that promotion at work made me roll coal even harder!

My state doesn't test diesel emissions and won't anytime in the near future. I've only owned diesels cars. I'll be just fine. I'm keeping my 335d forever and will enjoy it between now and then. Sorry if that hurt your feelings, I enjoy my tuned car. Hope you don't lose any sleep over it.

There are 3 diesel cars sitting in my driveway. My tuned 335D, a 328D that I hit 50mpg on a highway trip last month, and a Golf TDI that I get 45 mpg highway.

/This is probably something that will start a "beat a dead horse argument" and lock the thread, but oh well. The VW TDI "diesel gate" thing was just a big money grab for the United States. And it also served as a great excuse to effectively KILL European car competition with domestic car manufacturers. But more specifically DIESELS. European diesels were starting to become a big threat to domestic cars and the VW thing was an opportunity for the US to end it.

And if you take a real, critical look at the EPA/CARB/etc. response-they waive around the environment as a false flag and pretense to make a bunch of money in terms of fines and regulatory fees. I am not denying what VW did was terrible (it's absolutely inexcusable), but look at the bigger picture and see how it fits into the system in place. My personal conversations with the EPA in my state about dealing with diesel cars are laughable. I have hilarious email exchanges I could post.

A small portion of individuals tuning their diesel cars aren't the reason for what's happening.

I just heard over the local news that Paris, France just shut down all vehicle movement in the city for a day cause of the pollution caused by all vehicles, specially diesels.
