Smile Brief Report on DEF Tank Sensor Failure

Around 1 Dec I noticed the SES light was illuminated. Used my handy OBDII thingy that came with the JBD and found one stored code: 4BAC, which relates to the SCR system. I have a tad over 64k miles.

Took it to the nearby dealer on 5 Dec. No word that day. 6 Dec they diagnosed a bad sensor in the DEF tank and ordered the needed part. 7 Dec they installed but didn't finish clearing all faults. 8 Dec they finished by the end of the day.

The replaced the active DEF tank (SCR container 16-19-7-204-623), added the urea, replaced a couple of hose clamps.

Although I do have the BMW Extended Warranty and would have paid a $50 deductible, this was covered under the Federal Emissions Warranty.

Will report any related follow-up items if there are any.

Very lucky you're still covered. The 4BAC is the level sensor in the Active tank. The part only costs a few hundred, but BMW dealers won't replace JUST the sensor. They replace the whole tank, which costs $1200-$1600, and charge you another $1500 labor. Several people are mad as hell about DEF tank replacements because the individual sensors and pumps are not field-replaceable.

I forgot to mention that they told me, after I asked, that it would have been around $2,000 if I had to pay for it myself.

Wow, that's pretty cheap.

Please expand on this. There is a CARB warranty in California, but that only goes to 70000 miles.

Afraid I can't give too much useful information as an answer. They just told me it was covered by the Federal Emissions warranty. When I asked how they distinguish between the California warranty and the Federal one, he just said they have slightly different parameters, so they use the one that best covers the situation. I did not ask whether the CA one would also have covered this work, and if so, why they chose to apply the Federal warranty.

I don't typically dig into the details unless it's going to cost me. Sorry.

Nice. I just hit 78k miles on mine yesterday and so far so good. I haven't had any issues with my DEF tank or anything else aside from regular CBU last year and a new MAF sensor two months ago.

Sometimes I wonder when my DEF tank will go out after reading some threads on here, or the SCR crap... but my car seems ok... knock on wood... and I'm past the emissions warranty..

Its the 70K CA emissions statement in the warranty book. Several other states also reference it, its not federal.

How do I know? My tank was replaced in the early 60K's here in PA and I'm one of those states so it was free of charge save the several days I was down...
