2017 Model M2 - Looking to disconnect Center Speaker

Morning All,

I've read in many posts the M2 sound system benefits from the centre speaker being disconnected but I can't seem to locate it.

I don't have the Harman Kardon upgrade just the Hi-Fi option, when I look at the dashboard the only plastic trim I can see is the 10 - 12 inch by 2 inch air vent very close the windscreen. I can't imagine the speaker being under it as its very narrow.

I may be missing something, but it looks like the hi-fi option does not have a center speaker - Can anyone confirm / deny.

thanks in advance....

MJ

I'm fairly certain there is still a centre speaker.

Here is a link to disconnecting it, but in short, here is what to do -

"It's quite simple, you would use a plastic trim tool to pry up the grill that covers the speakers. You will then see the speaker screws and simply unscrew them on the larger 4 inch speaker and you will see the wiring harness. Simply disconnect that harness from the larger speaker coming from the amp and that's it. The tweeter runs from the 4 inch speaker, so no power to 4 inch, no need to disconnect tweeter. 5 minute job at most."

Also see this on real oem- centre speaker is there.

I've disconnected mine, i have the HK system though, you can't miss the speaker grille if your car has a centre speaker, it is directly behind the idrive screen.

Did it make a huge difference? Debating whether to do this as well

I think it has made a difference, sound seperation does appear better but i could not notice a huge change like some have said they've noticed. I'm no audiophile though.

For a free and relatively quick mod I'd definitely recommend you give it a go though, the only thing i found difficult was removing the blue plug from the speaker, took me a while. Lol

Okay, I've checked the dashboard there is no center grill behind the console screen. The dashboard is entirely in one piece. My car was manufactured in Feb 2017, and BMW must have removed it from car's which only have Hi-Fi option as standard. I'll add a couple of pics when I get a chance.

So, I guess this is an advantage as now I don't need to worry about disconnecting the center speaker.

I've disconnected mine, and to my ears there is definitely an improvement. I am going to upgrade the front and rear speakers to Focal, and change out the amp. After evaluating those upgrades, I will see if indeed a subwoofer will be needed.

I haven't heard the sound system in the M2 yet but I was planning on getting a good 12in sub if the bass doesn't hit hard enough. People say the sound system is pretty good but I need to hear it on my own to judge.

I was pleasantly surprised. Doesn't sound too bad, at least compared to my other BMWs (X6 with upgraded sound system and 328i with standard sound system) which leave a lot to be desired.

I've just taken the grill off one of the back shelf speakers, as I have the Hi-Fi option there are no tweeters. I'd planned to fit JL Audio C2-400x coaxes, so now I'm thinking I need a set of tweeters. Can someone recommend?

Thanks

I would recommend just putting the JL coax (or other coax that fit). Putting in components would require fitting in the crossovers in that tiny space.

Maybe someone who has installed components in the rear deck can recommend a specific model.

Do you know if this update is applicable for a 2016 model with idrive 4 and also if it is possible to see what software version you are running via the idrive?

I'm running Id5 so not sure with ID4 but it's worth a shot having the dealer update the software.

Did you have audio issues that were resolved by the update? Did you notice an improvement in sound after the update? My 2017 M2 was built 9/16 and the HK itself sounds pretty good to me but I am having a super annoying staticky call issue with CarPlay

Thanks for the info!

My 1/17 build also sounds pretty good too. Much, much improved over the '16 I test drive where the audio quality was lacking.
