M235i, 8AT, 32K miles. Bought it CPO with 28404 miles two months ago. Just had the 10K miles dealership scheduled service about 3 weeks ago (oil change, scope check, vehicle inspection report).

In sport mode, I've noticed a slight rattle and ticking sound from engine/transmission when accelerating lightly with paddles. Don't really hear it at highway speeds, more noticeable on quiet roads. Shows up just around 2-3K RPMs under light acceleration blips, especially around 30-40mph in 2-4th gear. Don't really hear it in auto mode since the car usually shifts itself before 3K.

Did a ridealong with a BMW tech at a local dealership today and he said the light ticking sound is normal and is VANOS operation. Just wondering if anyone else has heard something similar.

Here's a video - driving low speed between 1st and 3rd in paddle mode, accelerating slowly (few inches down on the pedal), doing no more than 3K RPM. It's that slight rattling/buzzing sound as the revs go up.

Rattle is a pretty generic term. Did the sound come from the front middle or back of the car? Could be the vanos (unlikely), heat shield, or muffler flap valve.

Sounded like the middle. I'm guessing it's worth checking that everything is tight under the car?

Yes, and don't forget inside the car.

When you say inside, do you mean under the hood? Is there any particular areas I should check?

No inside the inside of the car. Your ears can be easily fooled when in the car sometimes a sound, that you would swear is coming from outside, is really something in the interior like a rattling glove box, interior panel, or dash piece.

Took an 87 mile trip today and was able to reproduce the vibration sound going uphill, downhill, and straight. Seems to come on around 3000rpms, especially around 30-40mph in 3rd gear. Most noticeable under light acceleration. Sounds like it's coming from the engine or transmission since I seem to be hearing it through the Active Sound.

Guess I'll call the service advisor tomorrow and see if they can take a look.

Sounds like a bunch of BS. Mine started doing the same thing fairly recently and certainly did not do so before.

So I took it to the dealer I bought it from for a 2nd opinion and they told me it was also normal. They checked it against other M235s that they had, and also verified everything was tight on the car.

are your tires balanced? I get a shimmy/vib at about 50 mph, but I know that's due to my tires having a resonance at that speed. too minor to drop $100 to rebalance!
