Fitting K&N Air Filter to E90 320d

Ok, so i bought a K&N panel filter for my '06 320d as i've always put one in my cars.

Opened the bonnet, looked round engine bay for about 10mins, couldnt find the filter box anywhere.

Was going to leave it until my bro decided he was up for the task, after all, how hard could it be, esp since he has restored a car from the ground up.

Off we when... found it attached to the left side of the engine, disappering towards the bulk head.

We started stripping the engine bay to get at it, and stripping, and stripping and stripping!

We got there in the end, all stripped down, now we had to try and get the OE filter out as the cover does not come off proper! Got it out after a fight, then had to work the K&N in, total nightmare. Got it in, started building up again, took about 30mins to just get the filter cover to sit right and screw in again!

Built the car up, total job took 2 hours 30 mins!!!!! Unreal!
So if thinking about fitting a replacement filter, BEWARE!

Drove it down the road and noticed instant improvement in throttle response esp at low RPM, improved pick up. (car is re-mapped with sebring back box)

So all in all it was worth it in the end but by god!

So E90 320d is even more complictated than E46 320d. I have a E92 320d now, with a much better air filter installation. Not only that, these diesels are vacuum cleaners, and especially on the E46 and your E90 the relative small area of the filter exposed to the intake clogs us with leaves in no time. I've even found pieces of glass in the E46 intake..

WOW, you were not kidding when you said you had to strip it all down. That is just crazy for an air filter change. At least it was worth it in the end.

crazy........... i was thinking of getting this but my god. considering you have to clean the k&N and not just discard it, doing it on my own is quite difficult proposition. makes you wonder if it IS worth it really or just let the mechanics change it during regular service.

If your car is still under the 3 year maintenance plan, I would not do it. Wait until it is out of the free maintenance and then do it.

I've seen two different replacement air filter guides...would my E91 320d have the easy one or the difficult approach?

the easy replacement instructions are here http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4101

Last saturday I too started to replace my airfilter in my e91 2ltr diesel and was shocked with the work to just get to the filter. I was unable to open the filter housing as wide as you show in your pictures and came to the thought that the strut brace would need to be removed first but as these bolts need to be replaced when you remove them I gave up.

Hi,

I just changed my self the K&N fillter arrived from US . I am from Romania.. an tooked me 3 h to make it fit inside

After long time replacement and with not quite all the tools I was hoping to have I fited inside.
The problem was Got for a run to see how it works... and I was pretty dissapointed my car is evean slower... how is that posible?

I need to mention that I was low also on fuel.. like maximum 25 km to run..

Maybe the fuel was bad it has water or something because is on the end?

Or the K&N filter made my car slower ?
