Question Muffler Mod (Removing packing material and spot weld)

Hi everyone,

I heard a 335i with a "Muffler Mod" the other day, and I thought it was the MPE version, but the owner stated that it was just a simple mod to the muffler.

More info on the mod:
http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=819125

Has anyone here with a 235i or 240i tried this?
I'm looking to keep the car relatively quiet but be a little throatier when on the gas. From what I've read it sounds nearly the same as stock except for when your >50% throttle.

I'm planning to take my car to a muffler shop this week to just get some ideas/thoughts on this mod.
I heard a straight piped M235i and personally that is WAY too loud for my taste.

Thanks in advance!

just get a dump/ cut out.

When you want to be really loud, dump to the open outlet.

Haven't seen one on a 235 before, I wish the valve worked like my old camaro valve did- basically goes straight pipe.

Sorry I meant the stock muffler with the valve on one side. I wouldn't mind the electric cutout.

Saw YouTube videos where people cut open the muffler - take out the packing material - wrap the perforated pipes (the more you wrap the louder) partially - put the packing material (what is that called) back in and weld it up.

Since the exhaust is theoretically like a weird musical instrument, I've often wondered whether anybody tried tuning for sound with different materials/thicknesses. Musicians pay thousands for especially precise and specific materials, and can easily hear the diff. Would be interesting how this affects sound (i.e. the wrapping or opening up, perhaps thicker sections, altered lengths, or small resonance chambers). I think some muffler companies do some of this, but I've never seen it as a changeable option, or with back-to-back comparo's.

And your cutout should get an electronic butterfly, so you don't have to crawl under to open it up. Those do still come bundled with the Mexican musical horn and a set of fuzzy dice, right? Just like my Uncles' old Impala.
