Intermittent "Not Charging"

I have 106k miles on my 2011 335d. Today while driving back from dinner I noticed that the power steering had failed - believe me, it's not hard to spot that at low speed in a parking lot, and then 30 seconds later the "Failure to charge" light came on. I stopped and shut her off, then on restart it all seemed to be fine. Drove home and had the power steering fail twice and the light come on once in a 1 mile drive. It was all fine again by the time I got home.

Normally I would think this was a serpentine belt failure, but the intermittent nature of it, and the lack of the loud screeching that would accompany a slipping belt seem to indicate otherwise.

Any ideas? Obviously I'll be calling my mechanic (who is great) on Monday, but I'd appreciate any thoughts on what I might expect.

Thanks,

Ian

I'm guessing from other threads that this is my harmonic balancer failing. Bollocks. I really don't want to drop a grand fixing this.

Yep, this sounds to be the classic harmonic dampner failure. Many here have DIY'd the repair.
