Coolant leak around the thermostat/egr

Hi

I seem to have a small coolant leak around the egr/thermostat area. It's not big enough to give any abnormal coolant loss, I'm topping up about 0.5-1 litre every 4000 miles.

On the rectangular stainless box, which I'm guessing is the egr unit, there's a small build up of what looks like corroded water. Then there's a few splashes of the liquid on the fan behind the intercooler.

Has anyone had any issues similar?

Sounds like a common EGR cooler failure/leak.

Ok thanks for the reply. Are there different variations of the fault or is there a more common cause to look out for once I get the engine cover off?

The EGR cooler is known to get cracks in some cases. Please post up a picture after cover is off.

is the thermostat near the EGR cooler or under the intake??

Kinda underneath/behind the EGR cooler. If you look at the Commonly Asked Q&A thread, there is a DIY thread. Inside that DIY thread is thermostat.

It was the egr thermostat that had cracked on the end, leaking coolant. £30 and about an hours labour to do it yourself, also very easy to fit.

Glad to hear you pin pointed your leak. Just for your information, those of us with North American cars don't have an EGR cooler thermostat. We only have the engine coolant one.
