Goodbye Atlantis Metallic M3, hello 991.1 GT3!

I've done it - I've obtained my dream car! The 991.1 GT3.

It came at the expense of letting go of the F80 M3, but believe me when I say this - I miss the F80.

The circumstances that led me to getting into a Porsche is quite silly, but it still happened nonetheless. After driving bringbacklsb 's manual F80 M3, my desires for a manual transmission grew more and more. I hadn't even driven one for nearly 8 years and the itch was coming back. But it wasn't until I met up with exia_m3 to possibly trade exhausts in Woodbury NY, that led my wife and I to go to the Woodbury Commons, and see a gorgeous 991.1 C2S parked outside with a duck tail that made me lose it. I loved my FBO + full E85 F80 M3 and the monster power it had, but there was nothing I could do to make it sound as amazing as a naturally aspirated car, or look as appealing as a 991 with a ducktail

My search for a 991.1 Carrera GTS/C2S with a manual transmission and ducktail began. When I stepped into a Lava Orange GTS, it just felt so special. I got tonnes of looks in the F80 M3 with the gorgeous Atlantis Metallic paint, but it felt like the Porsche was just a bit more special. I asked my wife to hop in and feel out the interior, and she liked it! But when I asked her to turn the car on - she couldn't. The seats were 4 way adjustable only, and my wife being only 5 ft tall meant that even at the most forward position, she couldn't disengage the clutch to crank the engine over at this point, the salesman, knowing full well my admiration of GT cars by Porsche, invited me to sit down in a 2015 991.1 GT3 with 18 way adjustable seats to see if maybe my wife would like that. She enjoyed it, and I obviously did as well ('tis my dream car!), so the salesman invited me to drive it.. and I fell head over heels. it was white with every single option, and an aftermarket exhaust, but I didn't want to hastily buy it without doing research on it. Turns out it was very cheap because the car has had 4 owners with 9k on the odometer. Before I could put a deposit down, someone else scooped it.

Either way, I ended finding this paint to sample (Porsche's version of BMW's individual programme) 991.1 GT3 in Connecticut. One week later, after getting mods off my car and finalising paperwork, I took her home. And here I am, nearly 2 weeks later, still unable to fathom how I own this beast.

I will dearly miss the F80 M3. The Atlantis Metallic paint got so much attention and adoration from everyone, regardless of whether or not they were petrolheads. I miss the insane torque of the F80 and the general comfort (got so used to backup cameras and sensors.. have to adjust again, there are quite a few other niggles) but it's worth being able to rev a flat 6 engine to 9k RPM and just hear it scream. Won't ever get tired of that I think.

So that's it! Enjoy the pictures

First off: final shots of the M3.

And the GT3

I'll still lurk around these forums as I'm a BMW M guy at heart. I'm already looking into possibly purchasing an E9X M3 for daily duties. But I'd like to thank everyone that's helped me with my ridiculous questions over the past year, and primarily CaryTheLabelGuy for literally knowing just about everything there is to about cars, and helping me with the issues I had with the F80 pertaining to E85 and what not.

Cheers!

Um...is it me, or does the instrument cluster on your gt3 show that it's NOT a manual transmission?

The 991.1 GT3 only came with the PDK. The 991.2 GT3 you can order with PDK or manual...

yeah - i wasn't trying to be accusatory, i was just questioning why the lengthy discussion on manual transmissions and his wife not being able to reach the clutch, but then he went with the PDK anyway?

either way - i'd love a gt3 in my garage

Is the gt3 your only car? If so I hope you have no kids and work from home.

The entire story doesn't make a whole lot of sense, this gt3 decision seems like more of an emotional one than one based in reason. You wanted a manual .. ended up getting a gt3 in pdk. You went from a very usable fast car to a 2 seater with very high maintenance costs and a motor that catches on fire.... this car also prob cost north of 130k....

I hope you enjoy it but I suspect once the emotional high dies down there might be a different reality

^ I believe he said he’s looking for an e9x m3 for daily driving? An e90 would be practical

What's the hit on the wallet for the GT3? I'm curious to know what the white one vs individual color one was priced at? Love the black wheels with massive brakes. You do however park your super nice car in some really sketchy looking areas

I suppose I should've been clearer - I didn't care about the automatic transmission after driving it. When I first got into the car, I thought I'd yearn for the manual as most car reviewers do, but it simply was not the case. The PDK is lightning fast (more seamless than BMW's) and my wife can easily drive it now. She even endorsed the GT3 purchase over the GTS because of the manual, as she really didn't want to learn how to drive it. While redlining the car, I simply never thought that I needed the manual to love it.

This GT3 was 110% an emotional decision. I had lengthy discussions with my wife about how it's not going to be similar to the M3 in terms of carrying people and what not, but I eventually got her to understand that it's my dream car and that it simply doesn't make sense. We have no kids, and do have another car at our disposal for times where we need more seats. The GT3 also has a very decent warranty on it so I'm not worried about it catching fire either besides, that primarily happened in extreme heat conditions and on their older 2014 built engines, the new series engines that went into late production 2015 and 2016 cars have not had such issues.

But yeah, I wanted manual and got an automatic.. but it's the best damned automatic there currently is IMO. I am not missing a manual much, but again - the E9X M3 will be delegated to that task.

The GT3 I purchased was around 154k, whereas the white one was 139k. The major disparity is due to the number of owners and general condition of the car. White one had scuffs, dings on the paint, more worn out interior (no clue how really) so it was selling for a lot less.

But lol! I live in the Bronx so.. every area looks sketchy unfortunately rest assured, she hasn't been parked on the street longer than 15 minutes and is parked primarily in a safe location

991.1 has the bastard child engine. Finger follower issues and a non Motorsport engine unlike the .2. That’s why they will continue to depreciate unlike other gt3s. Sounds awesome though. I’d pass on it.

True, but Porsche stands by it. Any failure to the motor due to the finger followers is now covered for 120,000 miles, 10 years. I had an early GT3 that was delivered in September 2014. I drove it for 2 years and got full MSRP when I sold it last year.

When my car was in production, Porsche issued the stop sale delaying my car 6 months. For compensation, they gave me a brand new Carrera S to drive for 4 months, $2,000 a month for each month of delay ($12K), and invited us first takers to the Atlanta experience center for a weekend. We got to break that place in before the public. They also had an issue on their configurator that stated the 18 way seats included memory. Since it didn?t, they credited everyone who ordered it the full $2700 option price.

That car was incredible. Congrats OP.
