Bluetooth-enabled Mobile Phone update: BlackBerry Pearl 8120 top-rated, iPhone slips

I previously reported on our test of circa 30 Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones for compatibility with BMW's latest Bluetooth telematics systems. Here's an update with new tests and new phones. I found a clear winner among the new batch and, as others improve, the Apple iPhone slips in comparison. Our test of four new mobile phones revealed the same across-the-board inconsistencies that our previous... (click here to continue)

Great post.

I can definitely vouch for the BB Pearl. I have one and it works flawlessly with my E90's BT system.

I have the BB Curve and get a lot of complaints from people about the sound quality when driving on the freeway. They say it sounds like I am in a windtunnel, and then the quality improves when I am parked.

So a new phone would improve this? I just assumed that the microphone was too sensitive or had awkward placement in the car.

I had the same idea when people complained that I sounded distant through my Nokia 6126, figured it was the car's microphone implementation. But I recently changed to a Sony Ericsson Z750i and now everyone who complained before agrees that I sound much closer and clearer by far.

Based on my tests - yes. The Curve was not highly rated on sound; the Pearl was (as was the 8800).

I wonder if they tested with Win Mobile 5 or 6. When I upgraded my AT&T Treo 750 to Mobile 6, it was like a brand new phone. One of the things in the upgrade list was vastly improving the bluetooth stack. After the upgrade it displayed signal strength, all my missed calls, dialed calls, etc etc. Though it still didn't let me get into my phonebook, still have to use Jetware to get that.

The Treo 755p is a Palm OS only phone; you can't install WM6 on it. If you had a AT&T Treo 750 with WM5 you can download the WM6 upgrade from Palm's website.

Jonathan - have you personally tested any of the LG phones Verizon offers? I'm switching carriers (to Verizon), and after my 3rd Motorola phone died on my yesterday I'm determined not to get another one.

The BMW website lists them as fully compatible, but I've never seen anyone test any models other than the Voyager (which I don't want).

My Wife's LG EnV (9900, I think) works fine with our '08 335i sedan. Transfers phone book, sends/receives calls, shows signal strength, etc, etc...

The test phone Verizon sent didn´t work and I was so unimpressed with it I never bothered asking for a working version. I thought it was cheaply made and didn´t feel good in my hand.

W O W

At speeds of 60mph or higher, sometimes I even turn off my bluetooth and answer directly because no one can hear me clearly.

Considering how much I invested in getting bluetooth to work with my car, I am eager to try other phones now. I have an LG Chocolate 2 by Verizon.

This is welcome news that the phone may be the culprit, not the mic. I can do something about the phone, but not the mic!
