M4 got nailed

Nasty, nasty weather today. No injuries. Hard to see the extent of the damage, but I might not see this M4 driving around town anymore ...

Glad nobody was hurt in this. Looks pretty dangerous. Per FB post, the driver got out before the tree fell on the car.

The driver ran away after the car was hit. Not only that, within a day it's listed in the classifieds here so all things considered this story is not getting any less weird. I guess it wasn't insured?!

I’m not an accident investigator but I call BS if the FB post states he exited the car as the the tree was falling on it. You can tell from the damage and debris that the tree was already on the road way and the car drove under/thru it. Look at the damaged hood and roof being ripped off and see the scar on the large branch. You can also tell the car dove thru the debris since there’s a clearing. Otherwise the branch would also be behind the car.

There’s more to this story and I suggest the mods keep a copy of his for sale pics as a reference. I’m glad the driver is okay but it’s pretty balllsy to drive thru the tree like that. You could have impaled and killed yourself. All for what though? Getting on the news? Making an insurance claim? That’s insane. I’m hoping I’m wrong but the two storylines don’t match the evidence.

I strongly doubt the driver went through the tree on purpose. I suspect he was less than a second away from getting crushed. It wasn't a high-speed incident either (at least for the car). I'm sure the driver knows the road well and it is a downhill blind curve leading right to a stop sign and a busy road so you're only carrying too much speed for that corner once (don't ask).

As for the for-sale posting. How easy is it for a teen foreign double-tuition-paying student driver to acquire insurance for a $70K car? Makes me think money is not much of an issue here.

I don't know, there seem to be many less dangerous and bizarre ways to commit fraud if this guy was so inclined.

Also, the paper reported he was a UConn student. Wealthy parents would be my guess.

Judging from how the roads looked here, he may have been stuck in heavy traffic when this happened or slid into it.

I'm in PA and roads were horrible - inch of ice + 2-3in of snow. I drove my wife's car to pickup kids in school (AWD GT) and it was rough going in that car.

Not sure if CT was as bad, but I assume it was. Maybe he just couldn't stop in time or was sitting in traffic when this happened.

Still interesting that it is already listed for sale. Puzzling.

It is a quiet road and there was a lot of rain and wind. Approaching the stop sign you're mostly focused on what if anything will come around the curve from the right and the tree fell from the woods on the left. Bad time, bad place for the M4, but the driver was probably within a second of death-by-tree.

Thanks for the description. Provides clarity - yes, puddles, ice and snow will slow you down. Glad he was able to bail before it was too late.
