German M850i xDrive Coupe Priced at 125,700 EUR. What Does It Mean For U.S. Price?

COMMENTS

The German base price for the just revealed M850i xDrive Coupe has been announced at 125,700 EUR (German price list posted below).

Just for fun, let's estimate what this may mean for the U.S. starting price by using the F90 M5 as a basis for comparison. The F90 M5 starts at 117,900 EUR in Germany so the M850i base price of 125,700 represents approximately a 7% premium over the F90 M5 base price.

*If* BMW (and they've given no indication this is how they'll price the new 8 Series) were to keep the same approximate price % differential between the F90 M5 and M850i for the U.S. market, this would mean a base price of approximately $110,000 (a 7% premium over the F90 M5's $102,700 base price) for the 2019 M850i xDrive Coupe in the U.S. Remember, this calculation is just for fun and based on an assumption about price differentials between models, so hold your opinions on U.S. pricing for when it's announced in the Fall.

Also, for anyone curious, the Carbon Package (parts seen on the Sunset Orange M850i in the launch photos), that's priced at 4,100 EUR.

You're forgetting the 25% tariff that Trump will put on all German imports.

I already posted the below analysis under the Germany Catalog release from the other day:

"German price for the base M850 exclusive of VAT is euro 105,630. US price can be variable based on how many options are standard? To put pricing in comparison to the German M5 is € 99,075 exclusive of VAT and M5 competition is € 106, 638. 5 series M550 is only available as a diesel, so can't compare to US petrol model. US base M5 is $102,600. BMW Blog is claiming a US base price of around $100,000, but when compared to the M5, M850 will start around $108,000. Fully optioned with B&W stereo, carbon package, glass package, M professional, laser light, ect will push it past $125,000. I believe that M8 will approach in the US base price of $135,000. Current Alpina B6 is $124,400 and M6 GC is $119,900, and BMW needs to price above the 6 series to justify the 8 series badge."

If you look at the tech involved ... the price increase is justified.

Active aero - front fenders and grille
Active Front and Rear Anti Roll Bars
Four Wheel Steering
All Wheel Drive
Active M Differential

Only the last item was a feature in the last 6 series.

Indeed. Just look at used M760i's. MSRP of $170k on those things with used models only 1 year old now selling for less than $130k. Two more years and I'll pick me up a nice M760i and throw an exhaust on that awesome V12.

Got to pay to play, as a customer paying $130,000+ for vehicle has plenty of disposable $$ that depreciation is an afterthought. Need to lease so the depreciation is offset by BMWFS setting a artifical hight residual, after the intial sales peak by the early adapters in the 1% income bracket, there will need sales support like the 7 series has currently. A majority of the people who have posted "take all my money" upon the announcement on Friday will have sticker shock. Next there will be posts "I make $80,000 a year as a new college grad, can I afford the 8 series," that occurs in the F80 forum.

Lol at those I make x amount can I afford x car. I agree with you though we will probably see those posts. Then they'll try justifying it by calculating expenses and showing that a 2k lease fits in their monthly budget cause their rent is only 1k a month and etc.

Before you Americans start complaining about the price believe me you have one of the cheapest cars in the world. The same 8 series will be around 600 k in Poland. That means it's the same like you would pay $600 k us dollars in US comapring it 1:1 (earnings etc.)

For around 120 k in Poland you can get a Renault Laguna 😂

Yeah these hot shot grads thinking they can afford a 6 figure car right out of school.

My mom always said your income should be double or more of what you want to buy. I know that doesn't apply to everything but for cars it definitely does.

Even then that's not enough anymore. With student loans, even a big law first year at $180k can barely afford an F80 with rent, savings, and loan payments.
