Gas Milage
What kind of gas mileage are you guys getting with your 335xi ATs?
I know there have been other threads on this but I am specifically wondering if the mpg gets better as the car breaks in. I am only around 800 miles so obviously I've been doing a lot of driving in DS and generally being a bit more aggressive (and very little highway) but I cant seem to get much over 15mpg! At first I was all over it but with this last tank of gas I have really tried to lay off a bit and thats only gotten me to 15ish. Will this improve with time? Would a JB1 or SSTT help this at all (other than the fact I will want to get on the gas more)? (Yes I realize "Mileage" is spelled wrong in the title) |

Wow that's low. I have a manual transmission and I was "on it" the first couple of tanks also but my overall average so far is 22.6. It used to be 22.8 but I've driven less on the highway lately.

I do about 40/60 (highway/street) driving and get 22.1 mpg. I notice on long highway drive I get 25-28 mpg. When I do more WOT I get 15-16mpg so I bet you got one heavy foot.

25-28 on the free way, 15-18 in the city. Due to the nature of my work I either drive all city or all highway. I remember brand new, the car was only doing about 11-12mpg in the city though.

with lead feet (very heavy) and mostly town/city driving (on the brakes a lot), i averaged around 16mpg. I recently took a trip up to rochester, ny (basically 670 miles round trip) and my mileage shot up to 21 mpg... considering that the reading is an avg. mpg throughout the entire life's car (6500 miles).
seems normal to me. if you're bothered, reset the avg. mpg and test out the fuel consumption around highway and then in city. if your decently light on the throttle your mpg for the highway should be mid 20's, where as city it should be mid 10's.

Yeah, the 335xi gets pretty good highway gas mileage when cruising but when heavy on boost (with lots of heavy throttle) in city driving I only get ~15mpg as well. This seems to be the norm with turbo cars, when driving the car softly with light turbo spooling and boosting, you would get close to the non-turbo engine's mileage but as soon as you drive aggressive and start enjoying the turbo boost gas mileage goes out the window.
with 1500mi and 50/50 city/highway I have been getting 19.5mpg. In city only about 15-16mpg in relatively light traffic but lots of quick starts and on highway crusing 65-70 (Madison highways only have a 55mph limit ) I average 25-26mpg. |

I'm getting 21 mpg with about 3K miles on it but its getting better. I was only getting about 18 when I first picked up the car. My 335i got about 29 mpg I doubt the Xi will get that good but I think once it is fully broken in I will get about 25.

Yeah, when I'm cruisin (not rushing) on the freeway I try to let it roll at about 2k at 70mph. If I'm patient enough to keep that up, I get about 28-30 mpg, but it's usually pretty hard not to dart in and out of traffic with such a nice car.
Just for shits and giggles I reset the mpg on the computer to see what kind of mileage I'd get when I mash it (fully expecting to see it drop to about 3 mpg). I was a lil disheartened to find that the comp will log all data points, but it won't display anything less than 6 mpg. So I have no way of knowing how low it actually went. Haha! |

Well I reset the counter before cruising to work today. Its about 12 miles highway and 4 or 5 miles of stop and go. Usually I push it to the limit on the highway, my speed limiter (set at 90) usually dings at least 3 or 4 times. As NoSole said, resisting darting in and out of traffic when there are plenty of gaps and I'm familiar with cop locations is difficult. Its equally tough to resist flooring it on the on-ramp (and the off ramp which is one of those 2 lane, 360 degree ones - a natural skidpad).
So, I mostly resisted today. I still dropped it into DS on the on-ramp, (I wasn't going to let a Boxter with his spoiler set to raise at 15 mph get ahead of me) and I still cruised around 80-90 most of the way, with 1 or 2 bursts to pass but that got 25 mpg. I'm happy to see that these high 20s mpg aren't impossible with a little restraint. I guess that video on BimmerFile comparing the Prius and M3 is right, its how you drive that really matters. Thanks for all the input guys. |

We're seeing 25+ on my wife's commute, about 60% highway. Her car has about 19k on it. We rarely saw more than 23 out of her slower, lighter Subaru Legacy GT automatic (5-speed with 250hp). This thing is amazing. We've averaged 28 on a short road trip on the highway. My mom's E93 335 has gotten close to 30 averaging 70mph on a highway trip. Amazing engines (all calculated mileage, not the trip computer, although the trip computer is within 1mpg most of the time).

Ok I am not a young buck like the rest of you but I drive hard and fast on the highways. 21+ mixed driving but not doing fast starts. Recently on a trip to Long Island from Boston I got 29.6 MPG. That was doing mostly 65 -75. On the way back I got 27.8 but pushing 90 a lot going a minimum of 75. I am running Bridgestones on OEM 18" rims. Overall this car gets better mileage than my 2003 530i.
