2019 M340i versus 2018 M3
Roughly the same price, Although the G 20 would be brand new versus 1-2 years. Roughly 65k for both. G20 will have awd option, however I have a winter car now. I have a 2017 340 x drive currently. I do enjoy it, but I have always wanted an M3 and was ready to pull the trigger this spring, but now the M340 is making me think.
Other cars in the mix:c63 Amg sedan (not many used yet, but soon will be) RS5 (some used are popping up already, but still in the mid 70s) Discuss and give your 2cents |

Personally I'm not a fan of getting a first year model anything. Unless it's like 1 of 100 limited edition and have the money to get something like that. But then I suppose by that point I wouldn't really care about getting a first year model anything...
But back to reality, I'd go for the M3 if you like the current one and can live without some of the features of the M340

First year of a new production run in a German car is probably not a wise idea. I would wait for the new M3. It might have the all-wheel-drive needed for winter and I assume it will have no MT and thus will to live will be gone.

Maybe bmw needs to take the lead on this for once.

The G20 don't offer 6MT if the M3 has that option I would go with M3.

If you live in Chicago, you don't "need" AWD. I'd rather have a RWD car for 90% of the year and use winter tires for the rest of the 10%. I used to live in Chicago. A car with an LSD and winter tires is very sure footed in the snow.

Would still be nice to have a choice of AWD or 2WD when buying. I prefer AWD which is why I chose the 440i X-drive with all M-performance options over the M4. Also it was a lot easier to find a 2018 pre-owned 440xi that had not been in an accident or started life as an abused performance center driving school car.

I don't really care about awd. It's not a major factor. I have a "winter" car

If you got the big M itch I doubt a little m will scratch it. Get the M3.

Look I luv my 340 and I prefer it being the daily driver
and the M340 is not too far from the existing 340 no matter the hype of being new but if you are considering an F80 vs M340i , I would get an F80 instead of either if you can get one |

Where do you get the 10% figure from? If you live in places like Chicago, Boston, etc you need to get your winter tires on by mid to late November and keep them on until mid April. You have winter tires on for about 40% of the year, 50% if you want to ensure you aren't caught unprepared by an early or late season snow storm.

I put on winter performance tires. Pirelli sotozeros allow winter traction, but allow high speed driving on highways.

One notable exception are the super sticky summer tires (that no 3 series comes with) that could possibly crack in extremely cold temperatures. |

Instead of a used F80, look at a new M2 Competition.
I'm in the same boat: my '17 340 lease will be up mid 2020 and I don't know if the new G80 M3 will be available then or not. I will consider a used F80 then; a new M2C and the new M340. I can relate to the M itch, but have no idea what my decision in 2020 will be. |
