Is there less headroom in G20 than F30? Has it been downsized to that of the E90?
The official specifications page for the G20 lists headroom at 38.7” versus 40.3” for the F30. It has lists the G20 as being a bit taller. (https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1540476 ) I wonder if the headroom spec is a misprint. I have an F30 335i and I fit comfortably but its out of warranty and its getting to be time to move on a newer car with less mileage.
I don’t want the 330i without comfort access and no sunroof if that is even available on the G20. I would only want the M340i with many of the option boxes checked. I liked reading the automotive press writers who have almost unanimously credited the G20’s improved driving dynamics and I have looked forward to test driving and probably buying one. To save the time of some helpful responders and a few electrons worth of storage space on the board’s servers I will say that I am not freakishly tall nor am I in the NBA. I am taller than average and I do have a longer than average torso but its not hard to find posters on various BMW and Porsche forums with similar height and torso dimensions who also complain about lack of headroom in cars. Yes, I can fit in an E90, which has the same official headroom numbers as the G20, if I slouch as someone posted on the e90.post forum on 11-20-2006: “Ironic, I sat in the E92 today for the first time and had trouble with my seating position. I'm 6'2". I think it largely depends if your tall from the waist down or waist up. I don't have really long legs and it was tight for me. You can't get the car w/o a sunroof so I may be screwed. Keep in mind I'm using correct seating/driving posture so if you like driving in "pimp mode" then you won't have a problem. I may try again to see if I can get the right fit. I drive an e46 M3 w/o a sunroof, with the sunroof I do not fit.” As another poster suggested, I could move over to the right a few inches in the driver’s seat, open the sunroof and stick my head out the top, but I don’t favor that option. I have driven the X3 M40i and the SQ5 and I don’t have to slouch in them, but I’m a car guy who prefers 3 series size sports sedans with options not available on 2 series cars. Yes, I can wait until G20s hit the new car showrooms and see for myself if I can fit without slouching, but if I can find out now with a reasonable amount of certainty that the G20 headroom has been downsized back to E90 size, I can move on to plan B – whatever that may be. |

Have you tried just reclining a bit? I'm about 6'2" and I never have problems with headroom even though I have a relatively upright posture. My friend is a bit over 6'3" and he always leans way back when he drives. He seems a lot taller when sitting down.

They compare it to the F30's headroom of 1023 mm. (converts > 40.3 in). Still less than the F30 but yeah... could be a typo. You'd think BMWNA wouldn't make a major boo-boo like that... Source: https://motor-fan.jp/article/10005952?page=2 E90's headroom is actually still less than the G20's @ 37.4.

I question these types of measurements. You never really understand how a seat that is has a varying countour gets measured to the ceiling. If a seat has a deep bottom seat does that dimension not get counted? Trunk space is similarly confusing.

I have for a few years believed that the F30 measurement is for models without a moonroof. The BMWUSA site list the 3-series with 40.3 inches of headroom and the 5-series with 38.8 inches. My 2017 530i has more headroom than my 2015 328i.
One difference between the 3 and 5 series is that the 3 can be had without a sunroof while the 5 always has it (at least in the U.S.). The published 38.7 inch spec for the G20 is probably for sunroof-equipped models. That's only 0.1 inches less than the headroom of the current 5-series. Maybe the thing that we're questioning is that BMW is now telling the truth about the models that we're buying. |

I have a fairly tall upper torso, but I'm average height. I did not feel more cramped in the G20 than the F30. |
