Broke Down...

Picked up my X5 last week. In the middle of a 5 hour road trip it pops up with "Drivetrain Malfunction" and goes into limp mode. The BMW Roadside rep said they're getting a lot of calls with this same issue on "the new model year", but not sure if that's accurate. All I know is I'm stuck waiting on a tow truck with two 2 year olds. I'm beyond pissed off....

I get small issues and problems first year of production, but a drivetrain failure should be a rare thing these days especially as the powertrain is proven and used in many models for a while now.

Not initially but later on it cleared after it had cooled down. By then I had gotten my family to a hotel nearby, came back and waited on the tow truck. It was getting too late to try to press on when I had a safe option to get off the highway. I couldn't take the risk.

They used to if you were 100-150+ miles from home but these rules change.

Based on this experience... they arranged a tow to the closest dealer, which was 56 miles away, said they'd send an Uber or Lyft or find a rental car. They also said since we're greater than 100 miles from home they'd cover transportation, food, and lodging. You do have to pay for everything, keep receipts, and file for reimbursement.

Sorry to hear about your issues, OP. Hopefully, your family is ok and you get to the root cause of the problem.

Thank you. Finally getting the kiddos to sleep at the hotel. At least they've been having a blast in a new environment. Lol.

It's a 40i M Sport trim.

Tomorrow we soldier on with the finest available vehicle I could find in Sulphur, Louisiana... the Hyundai Elantra. Well, two Elantras. Couldn't fit everything in one and it's the biggest car they had available. Good times...

OP; sorry to hear your trip was disrupted - I've been there and getting the family safe and onward is always the best option. Hope the remainder of the trip is smooth sailing.

As to this comment, what do you mean an issue with the F15s as well? The after it had cooled down comment from OP on the engine trouble clearing makes me wonder if it's an overheating issue on the transmission or oil temperature or something. And, you know, it's winter...

Sorry to hear about the post's experience - I would be very upset too.

I've had this happen to my F15 X5. I came off a freeway and all the warning lights turned on - went into limp mode. I slowly drove home and emailed the dealership. The dealership called a few hours later and I turned the vehicle back on - the vehicle immediately did some sort of update with the engine on and all the warning lights cleared out. Some sort of self-diagnosis. I was stunned that they could do a remote diagnosis and fix.

Picked up our X5 50i in Chicago and drove it over 700 miles home to Atlanta after putting 500 miles in Chicago. No issues at all on this one. I did have drivetrain malfunction pop on my Euro delivery M5 but it was on the way to drop off point so didn't bother with it. Had it fixed stateside, turned out to be low on coolant for turbos.

I have a G05 50i and had this happen to me on Friday. I was able to limp to the dealer where the car is being worked on now. Luckily for me I was in my hometown. Sorry to hear you're situation is worse. Any update from the dealer yet?
