Replace Battery

Yesterday I picked my car up from getting film and ceramic protection, and since then I have a “Replace Battery” message.
The dealer can’t get me in for service till Friday.
Does anybody have experience with that warning? Do I run a risk of getting stranded, or is it one of those things that isn’t all that serious and I can drive it a few more times before Friday?
I have owned it since 12/22 and have only put 110 miles on it. Now that I’m back in town and the protective coating is done, I would like to actually drive it.

Welcome to modern BMW ownership, unless you're driving it daily with over 10 miles per trip, you're going to need a battery tender. The daily power usage while parked will drain your battery in 1-2 weeks, not months like the "good old days"

Amazingly the G05 has 2 batteries, one under the hood and another in the trunk. Could be one that went bad or both. I would at least charge the one in the back or have someone help you do it before you take it out again or carry a portable car booster...

Here is the one in the trunk. Where is the one under the hood located? Day one after receiving my new X5 I hooked up a pig tail for a Battery Tender Jr. I use them on everything for years.

Thank you for your reply.
A drained battery after two weeks seems ridiculous. I may have to take the scenic route every time I go somewhere.
The car shouldn’t use any power when in idle state instead of stand-by state, is that correct?

How often do you use the battery tender?

All the time. I dont drive my X5 everyday so as soon as I pull in, I plug it in. I do the same with my 911 and even my truck. I have had batteries in my Harley last over 7 years by doing this practice. The parasitic loss from new vehicles on batteries is much worse with our new ultra high tech electronics. The rule is, if you let your car sit for more than 3 days, it would be beneficial for you to use a battery tender to keep your battery healthy and last a very long time. Your car will start in 2 weeks without a battery tender but its hard on batteries to keep depleting it this much.

You can get a Battery Tender Jr from Amazon for under $30. In BMW world that is practically free for what it does.

AFAIK it's in on the Passenger side near the firewall underneath some covers. According to the tech docs, you either get another AGM but smaller 12v battery or a LifePO lithium battery depending on options. What's interesting is the secondary battery is on it's own circuit and only connects to the main power bus when needed, usually during a start/stop session or when the steering rack/stability control is drawing large amounts of power

Are you guys saying that if I’m a daily driver 10 plus miles and I go away for a week I’m going to come home to a completely dead battery?

I don't drive my G30 (2018 540i) for 5-10 days. As long as the battery is in good condition, the car should start right up. Now, I know that i will probably be replacing the battery every 2-3 years as opposed to 5 years because I am letting it drain down quite a bit but I don't have much of a choice as there is no outlet nearby.

My guess is that the PPF installer left the doors open on the X5 for 12 hours a day with the interior lights on and the display on and that drained the battery to the point where it is showing this warning message. The battery may just need a charge and the warning message cleared out.

Somethings wrong for sure. If for example you go away for a 2 week vacation your battery should not be dead when you get back. The draw isn't all that much when the cars in an idle state. Maybe it sat for a while at the dealer before you picked it up and the battery was already run down or your film coating place ran it down somehow.
In any case bring it in for service and have them check it. Maybe it was just a battery that was already run down when you picked up the car, maybe the charging system is not functioning properly or you might have a bad battery.
Battery tenders are good but you should not need one for the driving you describe.

I had a bad battery in my G05 (the one under the hood). Dealer had to replace it by cannibalizing another car on the lot. Never figured out what was wrong with it. New one works fine.

As for your dealer not getting you in immediately, there’s no excuse for that. This is a brand new car and you deserve prompt attention. You did nothing wrong and obviously this has nothing to do with your detailer.

Looks like the G05 is using two AGM batteries?
I would expect the car would progressively shutdown services over an extended period to preserve the battery(s) including things like comfort access.
Does anyone know how this progressive shutdown actually works or if there are options to configure this?

If I leave my car at the airport for 2 weeks whilst on a trip - I do not expect to come back to a dead car - this would be unacceptable.......

We are speculating 2 weeks. It may be longer. Ask your dealer or service dept.

2 weeks? Try over a month.

The batteries are not available right now and on backorder.

Costco usually has a 3 amp Battery Tender for about $40.00. Sometimes on sale for $25.00. I've been using it for over a year now and it works great.

Tech at Battery Tender hotline recommended that exact charger for our 2019 X5.

I connected the BMW battery tender on the terminals beside the engine (where you would connect jumper cables). The battery tender seemed to be happy (correct lights).

Is this the correct place to connect?

Perfect. I run the cable out the front just right of the passenger headlight. This allows the hood to sit open all the way down and not touch the cord.

My G05 had a "replace battery" message on it the first time I saw it before I bought it. When I picked it up, the message was gone, they said they all come that way.

Reading this, I feel lucky. I've never used a battery tender and my cars can sit for 2-3 weeks at a time, and the only battery I've ever replaced was on my old 10 year old Porsche after it sat for 2 months in the cold.

I haven’t driven it since Monday and the battery under the hood has been hooked up to a Battery Tender Plus since Tuesday evening. My husband checked the voltage (It’s voltage, correct?) after the Battery Tender showed it’s fully charged and it was at 13.1. Hooking it back up after a few minutes, the Battery Tender started charging again because the charge was below 80%.
