iPhone 3G compatible with BMW iPod kit

Just tried it out and it works.

One caveat: When I hooked my iPhone up to my corporate email system (via MS Active Synch) it forced me to enter a complex password on the device (no big deal).

When I plugged the iPhone into the BMW adapter with the device locked it DID NOT recognize it as an iPod. Once I unlocked it, and plugged it back in, no worries - controls work through the BMW radio (I don't have idrive).

The iPhone itself displays an error message and says that the "accessory" isn't compatible - but obvioulsy that is BS - works great.

Also I paired the bluetooth in about 1/2 minute - but have yet to make calls with it so far - should be no issue....

Cheers,
-j

yeah - you want to unlock the iPhone if you have a password on it. . . although I have found that sometimes it will still go even with it locked.

Mine works with the iPod kit also, but that is not the issue causing all the problems. The problem with the new 3G phone is that Apple changed the pins used for CHARGING. While my audio and BT are fine I no longer can charge my phone when connected to the BMW iPod adapter which makes things less convenient for overall use in my car. I had to buy a USB adapter for the center console that ONLY charges the phone in my 2006 E90.

Does anyone know if this problem is universal? I seem to have no problem charging my iPhone 3G using 6FL...(2008 335xi produced in December)

So I did notice the same behvior as well... the control works, however it doesn't charge (I hadn't even looked at this the first time, since I assume the charge was working).

I tried to plug the cord that came with the iPhone into the car's USB port . . and that did in fact charge the device. I plugged the headphone jack into the car's audio "in" jack using a male-male mini phono cord. So now I have sound and charging. HOWEVER. for some reason the car doesn't recognize the device as an iPod . .so I've lost the car control - basically, this is pretty worthless solution.

For some reason, BMW gave me two iPod adapters when I got the car (part number 0 440 796). I think I'm going to crack one open and re-solder the pin configuration to the power to be correct. If this is possible, I'll post it up here.

In the meantime, I think I'll just use it as is and not worry about the charging aspect so much.

Mine seems to be working very sporadically. It does not charge, I have a pre 3/07 (by 2 weeks) and it appears that the dealer installed unit doesnt charge the iphone 3G. The music playback is very buggy, ie, yesterday it was playing and all the sudden it stopped so i got the iphone out of the glove box, and it had the message up asking if i wanted to switch to airplane mode (I had already hit no when I plugged it in). Once I hit no again the iphone went back to the ipod screen, but no music, and I couldnt change the track with the radio. If i hit play or changed the track on the iphone music plays and track changes. This is shitty, anyone else had this problem.

I have the orig iPhone and 6FL and I seem to be having issues with the lock/unlock thing. Even with the phone unlocked I have been having problems getting it to work. Hopefully this is something that Apple will fix in the next software release because everything worked perfectly before the 2.0 update. I havent tried yet to see if my contacts are working via bluetooth but I have read that people are also having issues with that. Hopefully Apple and BMW will get this worked out since both are touting their integration with the iPhone.

I just got my 3g also. I think it works GREAT! Try downloading the pandora radio application. You can play sattelite radio through the iPhone. It's a great FREE program.

So, just to clarify:

are you guys able to play the ipod music feature from the iphone through the USB jack

-OR-

do you need to plug the headphone jack into the auxilary port for audio, and solely use the USB jack for charging??

-I have a 2007 non-idrive E90 with the iPod option ($400!) and a brand new iPhone 3G. The phone charges when attached to the USB jack, but the audio display on the car says "unsupported device", so no music. What gives?

My iPod Nano works well.

Thanks

Mine works weird as well... I tested it on my X5, and there it charges while listening to music as well. But on my 335, I can only hear music.... does not charge. Well, it did once and hasn't since.

anyone have news on this...

supposedly BMW produced a new cable in 8/07 that is compatible with the 3g (ie, charges through USB pins)

the only other options I have seen are to either get the

Kensington 4-1 charger and use the pass through ipod connector to charge the iphone

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...reative=380601

or this adaptor coming in Sept.

My iPhone only actually charges if I say to enable airplane mode when I plug it in.

I plug the phone in where my iPod is normally plugged in to charge. I get an error on the iphone and says blah blah only if you enable airplane mode but i wont be able to receive calls. If I say yes to enable airplane mode it charges. If I say no I continue to get calls, I can play MP3s off the iphone(although they have interference and sound bad some of the time), and blue tooth syncs, HOWEVER even though the phone says it's charging the battery never increases, unless its the slowest charge ever. In airplane mode the phone charges as normal(which means pretty fast) but I obviously can't receive calls.

God did that make any sense?

I have a 2008 135i and the ipod cable that shipped with the car appears to charge the iphone 3g as well as allow audio play through the car's stereo system...

However, when I plug the adapter into the iphone it says "not an iphone supported device. do you want to enable airplane mode?" I say no and everything seems to work OK. Is this a problem?

Also, does anyone notice some slight audio interferance when listening to music??? Would this be a Logic7 issue?

Ok. If i buy the BMW OEM kit and have it installed in my 01/2007 2007 non idrive 328i, will that charge my IPHONE 3g? That is the 100,000 dollar question. Anyone have an answer?

for those interested, I tried both of these options... the 4-1 charger did not work to charge my iphone 3g... the ridax conversion adaptor did work... at $40 it is a little pricey, but it does work and for those of us with the y cable it's a good alternative to buying a whole new cable.
