Buying a "new" 2018 M2 w/103 miles
Hello all,
Sorry if this is not posted in the correct section, but I am looking into possibly buy a 'new" 2018 m2 which currently has 103 miles on the odometer. The ocd/paranoia is kind of driving me nuts, is there reason to be concerned about the car having racked up 103 miles? Thank you. |

No need to worry, given that it's been more than 18 mths since 18' M2's were produced, I'm sure that mileage is due to excessive test drives.

Thanks all. I’m just primarily concerned that the vehicle possibly might have been driven hard or possibly redlined while accumulating those 103 miles.

I wouldn’t worry. A sales person has to go on all test rides. They would make sure that it wasn’t mishandled before hand. My M235i had a little over 300 miles on it and it was a perfect car as far as reliability.

“Possibly redlined?” I guarantee it with 100+ miles of test drives. Whether or not it’s a long-term issue for reliability is up for debate, but if the redlining bothers you personally, i’d look elsewhere.

I plan on keeping the vehicle 8+ years barring any unforeseen circumstances. The other m2 I was interested in also has 93 miles on it, do not have many options other then to buy out of state which starts to become costly as well. Msrp is listed at $63,xxx dealer is willing to do $55,500 OTD if I qualify for financing through bmw for 4.55% for 60 months. (The sales rep said I would be able to re-finance after 3 payments.) Thanks everyone for the input and time. |

I test drove an M2 that had 60 something miles on it, the CA who rode with me said I could "get on it" but not to take it above 5500 since it's in the break in period. I basically just gave a little extra in 2nd on an on ramp, but never went over 5500. I'd say as long as the dealer has good CA's that it was most likely never redlined.

Forget about reports. There's no such thing. There may be some secret "black box" that records revs versus time and stuff but it's for BMW's internal use (in case you sue them or make suspect warranty claims). It's like asking Trump to give you reports that he colluded with Russia. Even if he had it, why would he? |

$55K for what is basically a new car with full warranty is a great deal. Sure, you could find a used one for less money, but that's not what you want, is it?
The only bad thing with the deal is that the car is worth a lot less if you were to try and sell it soon (which you do not intend to do) and that's true with any new car, right? I bought my 2018 after it had sat in the showroom for many months, certainly overpriced and probably with a lot of test drives and failed negotiations. By the time I came along, the 2018 model year was over and I was able to negotiate a good deal, not a great deal like yours, but a good deal compared to the folks who paid sticker or more. I too was a bit concerned about test drives, redlining it, etc. but really, these are pretty tough cars and I don't think it's a big deal. I suspect that the only symptom, if any, that may happen down the road if it was abused too much early on, would be that the rings didn't seat right and it may burn excessive oil. But a lot of BMWs are broken-in properly and they still burn a lot of oil, so who knows? I say go for it!

Yes, just make sure that the warranty start date is when you buy the car, not before. Sometimes some dealers will mark the car as "sold" to qualify for incentives, and that starts the warranty clock running. Maybe more true with Porsche than BMW, but it's worth asking.
The more I think about it, the more I think that 55K out the door is a fabulous deal, especially if the car is the color that you want and has the options (and transmission) that you want.

These things aren't delicate flowers. Even if it's been redlined a few times it'll be fine. It only has 103 miles on it after all. Asking them to "pull ECU data" or whatever is madness.

This one has been in the showroom for a while, racked up 105 test drive miles. As I said, it all depends on how much he wants the car. On burning oil, I agree with you. This is my 4th BMW and only the first one (many decades ago) didn't burn oil. All of them start burning oil after the warranty expires, despite my meticulous break in and extra oil changes regimen. I just enjoy the car now, and change oil when the message pops up in the dash. Doing more often won't help. |

This is very common, be it mad or douchey, in the Porsche car buying process (mostly GT cars).

I had bought a 2016 m235 back in June of 2016 which had 23 miles at the time of purchase (sold it due to rodent chewing through wire harness and insulation) and made the stupid mistake of selling it and buying a 2019 tundra which I sold back in January. I just have ocd/paranoia when it comes to buying tech products or cars.
Being a large purchase for me, I just want to make the best decision. |

Just make sure the documents say it's a new car. If they are selling you as demo, you could negotiate more. If it's new, warranty will take care of anything mechanical you may find later. Before signing, talk with their "BMW Genius" and ask all the questions you may have about the car's features. In particular, ask them to demonstrate to you (during a test drive) how the stupid "Intelligent Collision Warning" system works. That's the only thing that bugs me about the car. Everything else works as advertised. |
