Collision Avoidance System Activated Erroneously

My new X5 (produced in April, up to date on software) malfunctioned today. it was raining heavily and I stopped at a red light – I was the first car, with many cars lined up behind me.* The light turned green, I took off my foot off the brake, applied gas, the car moved about 10’ forward and slammed on the brakes and stopped, throwing my husband and I forward as I was nearly rear-ended.* There was a large red car symbol blinking in the center of my dashboard.* I applied more gas and the car started driving forward, then the blinking red car symbol stopped.* It's more than a little alarming that the front end collision avoidance system went off erroneously (there were no cars or other objects anywhere in front of me).* Fortunately, it’s only happened once, but it’s pretty scary to think how close I came to being rear-ended, or worrying if that could happen at highway speeds. The dealer said that was the first they'd heard of it. Anyone else encounter this?

Sensors fooled by heavy rain occlusion?

This (environmental variance) is why reliable autonomous driving is very hard and we're only at the 20% time mark at best (ie 20/80 rule). The other reason is ... people.

I don't remember anyone else posting about that. More than likely was some type of fluke caused by the heavy rain. Try not to worry about it unless you see it happening again.

Unfortunately the systems are not perfect. My F15 slammed the brakes on once due to what seemed like sun glare. Heavy rain/snow can also mess with the sensors. I'm guessing the G05 will get better as the software matures.

I experienced the red car warning in the HUD last night, but no automatic braking. I was going through an intersection and a car was approaching the intersection from my right, moving rather quickly. I could tell it was braking aggressively and wasn't concerned that it was going to cut me off or collide with me, and then was surprised to see the warning in the HUD (red car, side view, as if indicating the direction of the approaching vehicle). Not only had I never seen this before, I wasn't aware that it was even possible.

Pretty much the exact same thing happened to me the other day.
