I like that. If I were to get the V8 X5, I'd go for the 50i instead of M50i.

Do you know how long is 50 sticking around? makes no sense. Why make 2 v8 engines.

It is not the case with 550 - so why the x5?

I wonder if the 50i will only come in the XLINE trim and not the Msport trim. Otherwise why have the M50i?

My guess is that they need something to plug the almost 200HP gap between the 40 and M50

Yes, gotcha. I remember vaguely some incident previously on the site.

Thanks Jay for the heads up,

I thought they would keep the 50i as they just did some improvements to its V8TT engine for the introduction of the X5. In a luxury SUV, alot of people want the power but not the harsher ride of a more tuned M suspension. This is certainly true with the X7.

If you can order the air suspension on the M50i, will that be less harsh as a daily driver?

At this point no one really knows how "tuned" the M50i suspension really is. The press release leads you to believe that it has been adjusted for the power increase but with only a 67hp increase its reasoning seems a bit thin. Could be just marketing?? Its all speculation until it gets driven. Many feel it will get the same treatment as the X3 M40 with a much harsher ride than the current "M-Sport" suspension.

I am really wanting the M50i but not a super harsh ride. I am hoping the air susp will even it out

it is the first for M performance cars.

there is no x2 235
no x3 40
No 340
no 550

only M performance versions. but x5 is different - go figure

They just gave the X5 buyer that wants a powerful SUV more choices in the ride and trim level. They will have no problem selling all of their new X5's. Thank goodness BMW is offering multiple high HP options and didnt offer a 4 cylinder turbo engine option like other Europeans.

I was confused as well. I guess they wanted a "Luxury" option for X5 and X7.

Is suspect the 50i is kept for one reason only.

The $22k price gap between a 40i and an M50i.
It’s a Grand Canyon of a gap that a large majority of X5 buyers can’t or don’t want to bridge leaving 1000s of potential profit dollars on the table...
