The costs of waiting for MY2020

I'm trying to estimate the gains vs costs on waiting for MY2020 with financing scenario. What I'm coming up with is the below. Can anyone please share their opinion if MY2020 is really worth the wait:

Gains ~ $5,000 in trade in costs after 4-5 years given the same mileage

Costs: 1) higher interest rate (2.99% vs 4.49% likely which translates to ~$2,000 borrowing costs increase) 2) less incentives / less dealer discounts - this is a really questionable variable. I'm reading that in US some people still manage to get 10% off promises from dealers on the MY2020 but I imagine the deals will still not be as good as on MY2019 right now and you can easily recoup those $5,000. It will be a tougher game for Canada though, but we may still come close.

So in my books I would say considering it's the same car, MY2019 wins. And yes, if you add less bugs assumption here for MY2019 vs 2020, then it can be a strong factor, but will it really? I imagine June production already incorporated plenty of lessons learned from prior months, and Aug 2019 MY2020 production switch (most of it the same but still...) might even bring some new bugs that's going to take months to resolve.

Thanks everyone for their insight!!!

Financially speaking, probably will save a bit on long-term (5 year) cost of ownership. 2020 will have slightly higher cost, and probably leaner discounts at launch, but higher resale later. Regarding the software issues documented in the G05 launch last Fall, it appears the correction process has been ongoing. I doubt there are any available "fixes" that are being held off for the MY change, so your decision probably should focus on any hard changes...i.g. color additions, feature additions, etc. Nothing major expected based upon current info.
My build date was 5/15/19, and car has been flawless. I was going to wait for '20 because I thought my first color choice (Silver) would be available. Well, it appears Silver is not (currently) in the 2020 palette. Still hard to believe. So all-in-all, I'm glad I'm enjoying mine now & didn't wait.
Have fun on the configurator!

There are few additional options that come with 2020.
Are the dealers taking 2020 orders already?

Not taking any orders for 2020 yet. As far as options - nothing significant, just drive recorder, some color changes (Tartufo / Gogniac are gone).

So how's my math looking, did I get everything right?

I am actually thinking Tartufo but can go with coffee in MY2020 scenario since Tartufo will not be available. So money factor is really the key here, that's why I'm asking.

My dealer said they expect 2020 allocations around July 10th. At least for M50i.

I would look at it more from a point of view of when do you want/need it and is there anything coming/missing in 2020 that is a factor. Interest rates have actually been declining and many predict they will hold or even fall in the next six months or so.

Given that and that YoY sales for the X5 continue to be lower, BMW may be inclined to keep the financing rate low as well as dealers continuing to provide decent discounts even with the new model year.

Either way on balance it seems like you are talking about a relatively small amount so why not put that aside and use other factors to decide between model years. Good luck.

I am currently leasing a 2016 BMW X5M, which I have thoroughly enjoyed driving. I currently have around 55,000 miles on it and it has been a dependable daily driver, as well as a wonderful long-hauler loaded with luggage for various vacations and road trips.

Technically, my 3-year lease expired at the end of May 2019, but I extended it by four (4) months. I also purchased additional lease miles for what I anticipate putting on the vehicle for those additional four months. Since my extended lease will now expire at the end of September 2019, does anyone here have actual knowledge and not just speculation, of when ordering may begin and a production number assigned for acquiring, (purchase or lease), of a new 2020 BMW X5M? I really am hoping I can place my order in Sept. 2019 with an expected delivery date sometime in November 2019. Is this wishful thinking....???

Production for 2020 X5s begins in August. I am sure you can place your order in July or perhaps even end of June.

Yes, thank you, I am aware that the production for 2020 model year X5's begins in August 2019. But my question is specifically regarding the new X5M that has yet to be officially released to the public and is still undergoing its final testing. Unless I am wrong, I do not think that it will be possible to place an order for a 2020 X5M until sometime in September 2019, at the very earliest....

I'd agree, possibly even later given there wasn't any official announcement yet etc.

Which dealership did you order from? I called one in Chicago. They had no clue about 2020...

BMW of Omaha; very helpful, and had the complete 2020 Pricing Guide. Options we ordered not available in 2019 for the X5: Full Merino Leather, Drive Recorder & Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof (included in Exec Package), & Extended Shadowline Trim. Of note, at least one color was deleted for 2020 - Ruby Black, and Manhattan Green added (definitely an acquired taste).
